For centuries, people thought pizza could actually make you sick, all because of a strange misunderstanding that wasn’t even the pizza’s fault. Early versions were topped with tomatoes, which scared wealthy Europeans since they believed tomatoes were toxic. The real problem? Their fancy pewter plates contained lead, and when acidic tomatoes touched them, the lead would leach out and poison the food. Instead of blaming the plates, they blamed the tomatoes, spreading fear for generations. Because of that, only poorer communities kept eating pizza, while the upper class avoided it completely. Bakers experimented with different ingredients and doughs, trying to make it more acceptable, but nothing worked. Then in 1899, Queen Margherita of Italy got bored of luxurious meals and visited Naples to try local food. A baker served her a simple pizza with tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil. She loved it so much that the dish was named Pizza Margherita after her—and that moment helped turn pizza into a global favorite.

I would not be surprised if it was the company that made dishes who brainwashed the people about the tomatoes being toxic!
