Santorini is one of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea. It was devastated by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC, forever shaping its rugged landscape. The whitewashed, cubiform houses of its 2 principal towns, Fira and Oia, cling to cliffs above an underwater caldera (crater). They overlook the sea, small islands to the west and beaches made up of black, red and white lava pebbles.
Here are the best Santorini fun facts 🌋😎

*Volcano & Atlantis stuff*
– *One giant eruption*: Around 1600 BC, Santorini blew up in one of the biggest eruptions in history. It collapsed the center and created the caldera you see today
– *Atlantis theory*: Plato described Atlantis sinking 9,000 years before his time. Many think Santorini’s eruption inspired the myth
– *Still active*: The volcano isn’t dead. Nea Kameni in the middle last erupted in 1950. You can hike the crater and smell sulfur 🥾

*Architecture & island quirks*
– *Blue domes weren’t always a thing*: They got popular in the 1960s. Blue was cheap, matched the Greek flag, and repelled bugs according to old beliefs
– *Cave houses*: Locals carved homes into volcanic rock to stay cool in summer and warm in winter. Now they’re luxury suites
– *No rivers or lakes*: Santorini has almost zero fresh water. Traditional houses collected rain on flat roofs
– *Basket vines*: Grapes grow in circles on the ground called “kouloura” to protect from wind and sun 🍇

*Ancient history*
– *Akrotiri = Bronze Age time capsule*: A Minoan city buried in ash 3,600 years ago. They had multi-story buildings, drainage, and toilets. Way ahead of their time 🏛️
– *No skeletons in Akrotiri*: Archaeologists found zero human remains. People likely evacuated before the eruption
– *Named after a saint*: “Santorini” comes from “Santa Irini” – Saint Irene. The ancient name was Thera

*Food & wine*
– *Oldest vineyards*: Santorini has continuously producing vineyards for 3,000+ years. Some vines are 200 years old
– *Cherry tomatoes*: Santorini’s tomatoes are tiny, sweet, and grow with almost no water. EU protected product 🍅
– *Vinsanto*: The real Vinsanto is from here, not Italy. Sweet wine aged 20+ years in barrels

*Random but cool*
– *Donkey traffic jams*: Fira’s 600 steps used to be the main port route. Donkeys still walk it daily carrying tourists and supplies
– *Black, red, white beaches*: All from volcanic minerals. Red = iron, black = lava, white = pumice
– *More churches than houses*: Over 600 churches and chapels. Most are tiny and private, built for luck or to honor saints ⛪
– *Sunsets are a sport*: People clap when the sun goes down in Oia. It’s a whole event every evening 🌅
