Discover one of Italy’s most underrated gems as Philip Saunders heads to the breathtaking hilltop town of Orvieto in this episode of Travel In The Know 🇮🇹

Perched dramatically on a volcanic rock plateau in the heart of Umbria, Orvieto is a destination that many British travellers overlook—but that only adds to its charm. With its winding streets, sweeping countryside views, and the awe-inspiring Orvieto Cathedral—a masterpiece of Italian Gothic architecture—this town is packed with surprises at every turn.

And here’s a fun twist: global superstar Ed Sheeran owns a property nearby… so clearly, he’s in on the secret!

Philip blends food and exploration as he dives into Orvieto’s culinary scene, sampling the region’s signature Umbricelli pasta—thick, hand-rolled strands served with rich, flavourful wild boar sauce. Still hungry? He tracks down a local favourite: a mouthwatering twist on the classic Porchetta sandwich that hits all the right notes.

Beyond the food, Philip takes in the town’s architectural wonders and climbs to breathtaking viewpoints, including the city’s tallest tower, offering unforgettable panoramas across the Umbrian countryside.

If you love hidden gems, incredible food, and authentic Italian experiences, this is a journey you won’t want to miss.

  1. what a wonderful trip and so well documented. I could almost taste the food and smell the aromas under that wonderful spring day in Italy. thank you, Philip ❤

  2. Hi Philip, I was in Florence last year. It is indeed a beautiful city but it was very crowded. What a true find Orvieto is, a fine example of a small, quintessential Italian town and much less crowded. I'll put this one on my bucket list for sure. The food looked amazing, I took a few bites out of that sandwich. Another great video Philip, looking forward to the next one.

  3. Good to see you making great content Philip. The location & certainly the food looked very nice. I’ll be looking for your channel to make some progress this year. Constructive comments: totally irrelevant mentions of other YouTubers & a whiff of clickbait in mentioning a pop star in the thumbnail nail who lives 37 miles away.

  4. The absolute GOAT is back and his content is better than ever. A wonderful video and the question is can he better this ? I am not he can!

  5. Nice to see you back Philip, and an interesting video. I love porchetta especially when it’s made with pork loin as that one appeared to be, easily found in Boston’s Italian North End neighborhood. Try sticking your fork straight up into the pasta then twist, it works better than holding it at an angle, I don’t think Italians use the spoon trick.😊

  6. That sandwich looked right up my strasse Philip (possibly minus the truffle paste!) Definitely need to engage python mode to deal with it!! However, that mushroom, whilst impressive looking would be the biggest waste of 6 Euro ever 🙂
