Italian military and police officers continued to carry out extensive passenger document checks at a Milan train station on Thursday.

Military and police officers could be seen wearing protective masks and surgical gloves, along with some passengers, as travellers were either permitted or turned away from travelling.

According to the new measures, public transport would continue to run but people would have to explain why they were travelling. Schools, universities and all shops except supermarkets and pharmacies will also remain closed and all sport events will be suspended.

The new measures, which became effective on Tuesday, are expected to last until April 3.

Italy has been under quarantine following a decree imposed by Italy’s Prime minister Giuseppe Conte late last week to contain the virus, which so far has claimed the lives of 828 people and led to over 10,000 people being infected.
