If you think all pasta brands are identical, I promise you, your sauce disagrees. Two packets can sit side by side on the same shelf. Same shape. Similar price range. Nearly identical ingredients. Yet one makes the sauce cling happily, while the other sends it swimming around the plate.
It’s not about the logo on the packet, but about how that pasta was made long before it reached your kitchen.
To help you make good decisions, I am ranking the most well-known Italian pasta brands, from industrial giants to artisan producers, not to attack anyone, but to help you understand what truly separates average pasta from exceptional pasta.

La Molisana and Pastificio Liguori are the ones that everyone in Australia is going to see side by side in woolies – so if you had to pick one of those two, which one is better?
I absolutely love the bronze cut pastas from Aldi. I am hard pressed to find any better pasta at that extremely low price range. If there is an a store around you, there is no budget excuse to not make super creamy pasta.
If the goal is to separate average pasta from exceptional pasta, then you shouldn't rate Voiello as B-tier. Availability has nothing to do with quality and therefore, this rating doesn't make sense. Why include it at all when it's pretty much unavailable outside Italy? Then rather compare brands on a specified set of parametres and include availibility. Furthermore, preferably on a scale from 1 to 10 or 100. Now 11 brands top the "S" and "A" list with only 5 brands covering B, C and D. For sure, the rating can be more detailed. Also, I don't agree with your rating of Garofalo. It's up there with the "A's". There is probably a reason for it being a restaurant favourite.
When you talk about supermarket, what country are these from? Can you do a video for UK specific pasta?
Vincenzo, I appreciate you expanding this from a short to full list. I don't think you've done it before, but I'd love to know your opinion on favorite Risotto brands. Of course there's different types of rices and are used for different dishes, but really interested on which ones you think are good or not as good out there.
As for the pasta's here, I have access to about 90% of that list here in my state of Minnesota. The access to quality pasta has greatly increased. I grew up in NYC and come from Italian heritage (3rd gen from Naples and Sicily) and even then and there most of these brands weren't available. I know my mom had DeCecco in house. But nowadays you can find many of these even outside speciality markets. Costco sells huge bundles of Garofalo pasta here!
Aye eaten on S tier pasta in the US!!! I simply love D'ABRUZZO . Especially when I miss living in Italy
Recently I switched to Garofolo and I find so pleasant. The sauce stay's on it and mouth feel is very nice.
Thanks for your video Chef!
yes very good i agree la molizana is the best industrial brand and if you want to pay less don't buy the 500gr packet but buy the 3kg parket if you find it you gonna pay less. for exemple in switzerland with ottos you can have La Molisana Spaghetti Nr. 6 3 kg, La Molisana Linguine 3 kg, La Molisana Fusilli 3 kg, La Molisana Mezze Penne Rigate 3 kg, La Molisana Penne Rigate Nr. 20 3 kg, La Molisana Mezzi Rigatoni 3 kg for 7.95 CHF 3kg and 8.95 CHF delivery so buy maybe more quantitiy 5 to 10 packet if you buy online and storage in good condition and rememeber it's avalalbe in some ottos supermarket shop.
I didn't know the availability was a criteria in this. I hope it was pure quality.
I will note these pasta brands next time I go to the supermarket the only thing is I can only find barilla and De cecco in my area if not that- trader joes version of pasta
Boring
Love the video ❤
Ok, now I will stop buying Garofalo. At least it's better than Barilla that I used to eat when I was younger.
Love the video vincenzo love your content your a amazing YouTuber I love watching your videos they are the greatest and the best and the coolest your content is the greatest and the best and the coolest it always brings a smile to my face watching your content your a amazing and fantastic cook vincenzo😊❤️❤❤❤ all your choices and ranks are so amazing ❤
(Small tip: Maybe zoom in at the end of the video to show the end results.)
I like rummo, liguori and molisana (and occassionally pasticio di martino if it's available), because easy to find in the supermarket around here. Will keep the s tier brands in mind for if i ever go to a Italian specialty shop.
oh dear. here I am in l'il ol' England and I have never heard of most of these. I try to buy el Cecco but our single supermarket no longer sells it. I will look for Armando but must travel to a nearby city to find Aldi.
From the brands I've experienced (never had any of the S-tier but a few A's) you are right on the money. Let's hope the industrial pasta giants never catch on to the color thing and dust their pasta in flour or something lol. I think when you look at super market shelves these days you can easily tell quality pasta by color alone even here in Germany where you have many no-name supermarket brands that are super good.
my favourite kind of video
We order most of our pasta from Fattoria La Vialla after I started making your recipes. It was the only place where I could get Pici. They are in Italy but they have a warehouse in the UK for direct sales. My wife can't live without their balsamic vinegar.
La Molisana is the queen of best buy category. In Europe, you can find it often for less than 1€/500g, cheaper than Barilla. most other A-tier brands are 2-3€ at least.
I cant find my favorite pasta, i bought it few times, it looks like a flower, like la rose pasta, but smaller. Maybe its not authentic Italian, but i loved the texture! I prefer soft pasta, so maybe its not Italian.
Thanks to you I've been buying only Molisana for years. So glad I can get it in any supermarket over here in Latvia 😊
just like kraft, heinz, all the unilever stuff, etc…bad food made popullair by family orientated pulp advertising
Holy crap! I did not expect to see so many A and S Tier brands here.
Having grown up partly exposed to the North American food systems; I expected a lot of crappy pasta brands with only one or two A and S Tier Brands. Man, growing up on North America foods really messes up my perception of things.
Lastly, there seems to be a lot of people in Italy that still take so much pride in their cuisine that they refuse to allow the forces of corporatization to mess it all up…unlike what you see in North America.
What pasta is the best with fusilli? Can't find guanciale or pecorino in my small town in Finland so no carbonara or other ones that need exotic ingredients, thank you vincenzo❤
Hi Vincenzo I'm intrigued how much you should spend on a bag of pasta and which ones you would recommend. I'm from the UK and most UK supermarkets have their own brand of pasta ranging form 30-50p to around £2-3 for Italian brands. I find aldis is quite good as they have bronze cut pasta which is pretty affordable. Unfortunately I have only every seen Barilla or De Cecco and I have found they are no better than the cheapest pasta. I want to elevate my pasta game would you recommend buy the A or S tier brands online.
Such a great video, I was looking forward to this one coming out. Happy to see Rummo as an A tier as my go to (when it's on sale) and DeCecco remaining respectable (my standard). Thumbs up from Cincinnati Vincenzo! 👍
Thank you for the advice.
2 suggestions from my side:
– I'd add Barilla's Al Bronzo range
– Show your local prices; it helps underscore how paying a tiny bit more (less than people spend on a single coffee) can make such a huge difference in the quality of your pasta and, thus, your meal.
Nice to see that the majority of pasta's are A to S tier. Shows how good the competition is. I would also put my full support behind Delverde. It has an absolutely amazing price to quality ratio.
Some of your Brands I have never heard of, but sometimes I can find Felicetti, and then I buy it.
What is widely available to me is Rummo maybe 70-80% of the Pasta I eat, mostly the standard shapes.
Third choice is De Cecco, for me available in the biggest variety of shapes, so if I want for example Cannelloni most likely I find De Cecco.
Thank you for this! I have mostly been buying De Cecco by default. My usual supermarket also stocks Rummo spaghetti and rigatoni I think I might try those. Most of the other brands you mentioned I'm not sure where I'd find them in the UK without buying online.
