In 2020, archaeologists uncovered richly preserved Roman mosaic floors beneath a vineyard near Negrar di Valpolicella. The mosaics belong to a large Roman villa that had remained buried for nearly 2,000 years.
As excavation continued, entire mosaic floors came to light, featuring birds, geometric designs, and human figures, all preserved in their original positions. The scale and quality of the mosaics show that this was a luxury rural residence, not a single room or small structure.
Archaeologists also identified areas linked to wine production, revealing that Valpolicella’s vineyards trace their origins back to the Roman period.
This discovery shows how ancient Roman life still lies hidden beneath modern landscapes.
