Russia’s Putin said Thursday that the food crisis could be eased only if the West lifts sanctions during his phone call with Italy’s Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
Mr. Draghi said he had proposed to Putin that Russia and Ukraine could cooperate on unblocking ports in the Black Sea where many millions of quintals of grain are deposited.
Putin furtherly insisted his consistent rhetoric that it’s the West and the West’s unprecedented sanctions that had made situations worse.
The Italian leader ended the call with Putin with his pledge.
Russia has been accused of “weaponizing” food supplies following the mounting “blackmailing” energy supplies accusations from the West.
Earlier this week, Russian military announced the Azov Sea port of Mariupol “functioning” days after its forces took full control of the port city.
Trading blames, Kyiv said its seaports remain blocked by the Russian Black Sea Fleet on the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
In addition to that, hundreds of ships have also lost the chance to set sail in Crimea.
Both Russia and Ukraine are major exporters of food.
The ongoing conflict is fuelling a global food crisis by sending prices for grains, cooking oils, fuel and fertilizer soaring.
