“Four of these steam-motor locomotives were built by the North British Locomotive Company of Glasgow in 1937, in association with Sentinel, for passenger haulage. The works numbers were 24413 – 24416; they were supplied to the Egyptian State Railway at the beginning of of 1938. They were propelled by two Sentinel steam-motors, independently powering the two driving axles. These motors were already proven to give low maintenance costs and favorable consumption rates for steam and lubricating oil, as well as even torque. The boiler was a conventional loco-type, unlike other Sentinel designs, and was built by the North British Locomotive Company, who also provided the frames and tenders.”

“This remarkable freight locomotive was one of several built for the Camden and Amboy Railroad (one of the first railroads in the USA) between 1835 and 1837, its grotesque appearance earning it the title “the Monster”. It was No 17 in the company roster.”

“The turbine and jackshaft of this locomotive is at the front. Forward and reverse turbines built by Schwartzkopff were mounted on the same shaft, with nozzle control by a group of four valves. Early in testing it appears that a turbine bearing seized, causing severe damage to the blading. It was not repaired and trials were abandoned; that was the end of steam-turbine experiments in Italy.”

“His original proposal was for a 6-4-8 or 6-4-6 locomotive with 3-metre (9 ft 10 in) diameter driving wheels, but what was actually built was in 4-4-6 format with driving wheel diameter reduced to 2.50-metre. (8 ft 2 in) The loco was exhibited in the Schneider et Cie pavilion at the Universal Exposition in Paris, 1900. It was intended to haul trains of 180 to 200 tons, (about four Pullman cars) at 75 miles an hour on the level.”

“D&SNG Nos. 1201 and 1202 are two custom-built MP2000NG (F40NG) type narrow gauge diesel locomotives built by Motive Power & Equipment Solutions, Inc. (MP&ES) of Greenville, SC sometime between 2018 and 2020 for the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (D&SNG) in Durango, CO. They were both rebuilt from two former Tri-Rail EMD F40PHL-2 type standard gauge diesels. Originally slated to enter service on the D&SNG sometime in 2021, they instead were both placed in indefinite storage in Durango, CO due to a lawsuit between the D&SNG and the now-defunct MP&ES, the latter of whom ultimately filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on February 25, 2022.”

  1. Sand on the rails to get the engine a good grip is a good idea, but running on railways on literal sand is a totally different story.

  2. Regarding "cab forwards": yes, the driver and the fireman may be in separate rooms. So what? They would have been able to handle that. Have you ever visited a (big) steam ship?

  3. I've got one if there's a part 23. NSWGR c34 class, a beefed up c32 which had a bad tendency to derail on curves.

  4. Great episode! Enjoyed especially the piece on "Monster", one of my favorite inexplicable sidetracks in locomotive design! I must confess I really like the unique ten-wheeler rebuild. And yeah, that little four-wheeler turbine is totally cute! Thanks Darkness!

  5. Part 22 dang been here since part 1 and it sounds like this is driving you mad…. keep doing it… lol jk your fine keep doing what you do it is wildly entertaining and informative well done sir

  6. Dark, can I ask you something about your placement of cab-forward engines on Worst Trains? Why do you do it and not acknowledge that it has worked at least twice in history? Most of the examples of cab-forwards that I've seen, because I haven't seen every video in this series and acknowledge early that you might have brought this up at some point, are one-offs or experiments trying to improve something that was already there. They weren't done out of necessity, forcing people to work on and improve the technology so it would be a reliable design.

Train of Thought made a video regarding at least two instances in American railroading history where cab-forward engines were actual successes because they were REQUIRED in order for the railways that used them to function. I can link the video if you wish.

  7. When I look at the chart, we're going up. However, when I look at the overall economic situation, I say we haven't seen the bottom yet. Trading has been going smooth for me. More emphasis should be put into day trading, as it less affected by the unpredictable nature of the market. Thanks to Mr Jake Brukhman for his amazing skills for helping me earn 12 BTC from 1.9 BTC through day trading. Great TA as always>🙌🏻

  8. That little Italian engine had four count em FOUR individual turbines! One for each wheel!

  9. You can do one on the worst Dutch locomotive ever built, the class 2600 "Beel".
A small class of main line diesel locomotives with, again, an engine meant for marine use which developed leaky bits everywhere, the drivers had to run for buckets of water at every station to keep them filled up with enough water to not seize.

  10. In my country Indonesia, there was 1000 Series Class Pasific locomotives for working express train in dutch east indie (now Indonesia). Because at that time ini 1920, 20 of this particular Class were built by the Dutch. This locomotives had 4 cylinders compound to make them ideal for high speed. However, the Weekspoor factory is just never built that kind of locos. And yeah, they were not suited for working flagship express they intended for. When pulling express train that linking the capital city Batavia (now Jakarta) with Surabaya that has operating speed up to 120kph. This locomotives just bouncing heavelly when travel above 90 kph, meanwhile the older Pasific locomotives ,the 700 Series built by the swedish were doing the job better, even becoming the world fastest steam locomotives to run on Narrow gauge track reacing speed of 127kmph in 1927.
That said the Dutch built the 1000 Series only for they prestige. They wanted they flagship train to pull by they own made loco, even they never had the skills to do it

  11. I have a locomotive for the weird list, its called the mason bogie. it comes in a 2-6-6 and 2-8-6 wheel arrangement.

  12. You should talk about the bothwell locomotive in a future video. It’s a very INTERESTING creation.

  13. You don't think the big empty space between the bogies on the two DEs might be a clue as to what major parts might be missing?

  14. i can confirm 1201 and 1202 are still in storage at the railroad. i caught them when we were pulling back into the station after our excursion trip.

  15. Well, why thank you for hating my people. XD i know us dutch people can be seen as brass but we are just very direct

  16. Please consider talking about either the LMS Princess Royals or the LMS Princess Coronations. A friend once said that when he first saw Princess Elizabeth, he thought she was a prettier version of the PRR K4s he also said the coronations were a more successful version of the K5s. I don't think so, but I'd like to know what you think.
