POV Little Italy’s Famous Restaurant and site of a Mob hit.

Most people walk past this spot without realizing what happened here.

On April 7, 1972, mobster Joe “Crazy Joe” Gallo was celebrating his birthday at Umberto’s Clam House in Little Italy when gunmen burst in and opened fire.

The shooting became one of the most infamous mob hits in New York history and helped cement Gallo’s place in Mafia legend.

The original Umberto’s stood at 129 Mulberry Street. Today, the restaurant is located across the street, while the site of the shooting is now occupied by another business.

One dinner. One ambush. One of the most famous mob stories in NYC history.
