We took our campervan into Bologna to find the best cheap food spots, budget eats, and real local experiences in Italy’s food capital.

From €5 aperitivo cocktails to €8 pizza & spritz combos, this is Bologna on a budget — without missing the good stuff.

After a chaotic Saturday night, we slowed things down for a proper Sunday in Bologna… chasing mortadella sandwiches, hunting down hidden local spots, and eating far too much gelato.

Bologna (aka La Grassa — “the fat one”) is known as the food capital of Italy, and in this vanlife travel vlog we put that to the test — properly.

This is real vanlife in Italy:
– Finding cheap food in Bologna 🍕
– Experiencing aperitivo culture 🍹
– Navigating ZTL zones in a campervan 🚐
– Exploring beyond the tourist spots
– And dealing with the consequences of eating everything in sight

We also go off-script… trying to track down a mystery local restaurant, escaping the city without fines, and figuring out where vanlife takes us next — Sardinia, the Balkans… or somewhere completely different.

This isn’t a polished guide — it’s real vanlife, real food, and real travel in Italy.

In this video:
– Bologna street food & mortadella sandwiches
– Mercato food hall (perfect rainy day spot)
– Budget pizza + spritz (€8 total 👀)
– Cheap aperitivo (€5 cocktails)
– Gelato overload 🍦
– ZTL driving struggles in Italy
– Imola F1 circuit & Ayrton Senna memorial
– Hidden rural Italy locations

Vanlife Tip:
Driving in Bologna isn’t easy with a campervan. ZTL zones can catch you out — check our full guide on driving in Italy to avoid fines.

Next stop: Sardinia 🇮🇹
Time to escape the city and get back to proper vanlife.
