Is the Sicilian and Italian in the IRISHMAN Correct?

This is a slightly corrected version of a video which was initially uploaded on my main channel. I apologise if you have already watched this. Linguistic content migration has always been something I’ve had in mind since the beginning of this language focused channel. I’ll try to do it as sparingly as possible as to not bother you too much with reuploads. All reuploads are a sort of “remaster” so I tough them up and correct them if needed. Thanks for understanding.

The Irishman (titled onscreen as I Heard You Paint Houses) is a 2019 American epic gangster film directed and produced by Martin Scorsese from a screenplay by Steven Zaillian, based on the 2004 book I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt.[4] It stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci, with Ray Romano, Bobby Cannavale, Anna Paquin, Stephen Graham, Stephanie Kurtzuba, Jesse Plemons, and Harvey Keitel in supporting roles. The film follows Frank Sheeran (De Niro), a truck driver who becomes a hitman involved with mobster Russell Bufalino (Pesci) and his crime family, including his time working for the powerful Teamster Jimmy Hoffa (Pacino). The film marked the ninth collaboration between Scorsese and De Niro, Scorsese’s fourth collaboration with Joe Pesci, and his first with Al Pacino.

In September 2014, following years of “development hell”, The Irishman was announced as Scorsese’s next film after Silence (2016). De Niro, who also served as producer, and Pacino were confirmed that month, as was Pesci, who came out of his unofficial retirement to star after numerous requests. Principal photography began in September 2017 in New York City and the Mineola and Williston Park sections of Long Island and wrapped in March 2018. Scenes were filmed with a custom three-camera rig to help facilitate the extensive de-ageing digital effects that made De Niro, Pacino, and Pesci appear younger. With a runtime of 209 minutes, it is the longest film of Scorsese’s career and one of the longest widely released films ever.

The Irishman premiered at the 57th New York Film Festival, and had a limited theatrical release on November 1, 2019, followed by a streaming release on November 27, 2019, by Netflix. The film received widespread critical acclaim, with praise for Scorsese’s direction, the production and costume design, editing, screenplay, cinematography, the use of de-aging effects, and the performances of De Niro, Pacino and Pesci. It was named the Best Film of 2019 by the National Board of Review and one of the top ten films of the year by American Film Institute. The film was nominated for ten categories at the 92nd Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and received numerous other accolades.

Plot
In a nursing home, elderly Irish-American World War II veteran Frank Sheeran recounts his time as a hitman for the Italian-American Mafia.

In 1950s Philadelphia, Sheeran works as a union delivery truck driver, where he starts selling some of the meat shipments to a local Philadelphia Italian-American gangster known as “Skinny Razor”, a member of the Philadelphia crime family headed by Angelo Bruno. After the delivery company accuses Sheeran of theft, union lawyer Bill Bufalino gets the case thrown out when Sheeran refuses to name his customers to the judge.

Bill introduces Sheeran to his cousin Russell Bufalino, head of the Northeastern Pennsylvania crime family. Sheeran begins to carry out jobs for Russell, as well as members of the South Philadelphia underworld, including “painting houses”, a euphemism for contract killing. Soon, Russell introduces Sheeran to Jimmy Hoffa, head of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, who has financial ties with the Northeastern Pennsylvania crime family and is struggling to deal with fellow rising Teamster Anthony “Tony Pro” Provenzano, in addition to mounting pressure from the federal government. Hoffa becomes close with Sheeran and his family, especially his daughter Peggy, and Sheeran becomes Hoffa’s chief bodyguard.

After the 1960 election of John F. Kennedy, Bufalino is thrilled while Hoffa is furious. Kennedy’s brother, Robert F. Kennedy, whom he appointed Attorney General, forms a “Get Hoffa” squad to bring down Hoffa, who is eventually arrested and convicted in 1964 for jury tampering. While Hoffa is in prison, his replacement as Teamsters president, Frank “Fitz” Fitzsimmons, misuses the union’s pension fund and gives interest-free loans to the Mafia. Hoffa’s relationship with Tony Pro, himself arrested for extortion, also deteriorates beyond repair when Hoffa refuses to help restore his forfeited pension. Hoffa has his sentence commuted by President Richard Nixon in 1971, although he is forbidden from partaking in any Teamsters activities until 1980.

  1. This is a slightly corrected version of a video which was initially uploaded on my main channel. I apologise if you have already watched this. Linguistic content migration has always been something I've had in mind since the beginning of this language focused channel. 2. Wait. You said you’d show us the actual Catanian accent in a second, but then you don’t. Did you remove it for copyright reasons or something?

  3. Siccome ci sono due sostantivi nel titolo del video (Sicilian e Italian), bisogna dire "are" invece di "is" (da un madrelingua)

  4. Saw an interview of Cesare Bocci about his role in the Montalbano series. He said that in order to sound like a Catanian he tried to sing his lines.

  6. I noticed my mandarin being from an uneducated background and was placed in school but couldn’t pick it up. I still say “This is (my name)” 这个是like English instead of 我是.

  7. Interessante la faccenda dell'inversione tra insegnare e imparare, in Sardegna avviene il contrario, le persone meno istruite tendono a preferire "imparare" quale calco dialettale

  8. i have many problems with this movie. it was a mistake to bring pesci out of retirement for this movie. it was not a great movie. it was scorsese trying to recreate magig from his old days, it didnt work.

  9. I remember there hearing that "in combato" is a thing in Spanish although according to Spanish people I've spoken to its an archaic form in Iberian Spanish and more of a Mexican Spanish thing nowadays, similar to how "Ey Cahrumba" is not something said in Spain itself but said in Mexico.
I wonder if there was some confusion.

  10. Metatron, Historymilitum is making a series at the moment about what a battle in the classical period would really have looked like. I recommend it and if you see some mistakes, you can make a video. Either way, it’s interesting.

  11. Minchia is a word we use a lot in my home town in the states. there was a large amount of Sicilian immigrants in the 1900s and at this point my generation doesn't even think of it as a swear word. We even use it at work, it's more like dang than d*ck.

  12. Thank God. An actual Italian/ Sicilian YouTuber commenting on the authenticity of Italians or the Mafia. Too many people think they know everything & they've never met an Italian in their life. Just fanatics who saw too many Mob movies. I'm only Half Puerto Rican/ Sicilian but it's in my blood. I know this world enough. New sub here. Ottimo lavoro, amico. Keep up the good work.
