Our walking journey takes us through Vernazza, widely considered the jewel of the Cinque Terre. The village is crowned by the mighty Doria Castle, a circular watchtower built in the 11th century to defend against pirate invasions. Climbing its stone steps rewards you with one of the most breathtaking panoramas in all of Italy—colorful houses tumbling down to the sea, the tiny natural harbor below, and the rugged Mediterranean coastline stretching toward Monterosso.
At the heart of Vernazza lies its picturesque piazza, the only village square in Cinque Terre that opens directly onto the sea. Here, you’ll find the beautiful Church of Santa Margherita d’Antiochia, a Ligurian Gothic masterpiece with its iconic octagonal bell tower standing guard over the crashing waves.
