🍽 What’s the Coperto Charge on Your Bill in Italy?
You’re at a restaurant in Italy.
You order pasta, wine, dessert…
And then you see a mysterious €2–€5 coperto on your bill.
😳 Wait… what’s this? A scam?
Nope! It’s totally normal—and it has a history. 📜

Il coperto is an old tradition that dates back to medieval inns.
It literally means “cover charge” and it used to pay for bread, linen, and a seat at the table.

Today, it still covers things like table service, bread, and cutlery—especially in family-run trattorias.

So next time you see it, don’t panic.
You’re not being scammed—
🧺 You’re paying for centuries of Italian hospitality.

Attenzione! Coperto is typically a flat rate, charged per person, and legally, must be printed anywhere on the menu. But, the practice of charging coperto is banned in Lazio, the region where Rome is located.
