Rome restaurant terraces were packed with customers on Sunday, the day before the Italian capital and multiple regions are expected to enter a ‘red zone’ lockdown.
Romans were seen enjoying their Sunday as they had lunch at numerous al fresco eateries and walked around the Italian capital’s city centre.
“We are enjoying a little bit of freedom before the ‘red zone,'” said Rome resident Grazia Cozzi. “It seems that people are respecting the rules.”
“If we do not return to normalcy after Easter we will not make it,” said restaurant owner Giancarlo Nitti. “We need continuity that we have not had for too long. Because from September to today it has been a continuous opening and closing, opening and closing.”
“The day we are having today is not solving anything,” Nitti added.
Due to rising infections, starting on Monday, 11 of Italy’s 20 regions will become a ‘red zone,’ which is an area of high risk of contagion entering almost a total lockdown. Only movements for work or health reasons will be allowed.
All of Italy’s regions will become a ‘red zone’ on Easter weekend from April 3 to 5, according to Italian media reports.
Italy has reported more than 3,2 million cases of COVID-19 and 102,145 related deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
