Chiara Lungarotti Chiara Lungarotti named Winemaker of the Year by Corriere della Sera, the most relevant Italian newspaper, guide. She has been recognised for her commitment to protecting the landscape and promoting Umbria’s wine-growing and cultural heritage.
October 30, 2026 — Chiara Lungarotti, of the historic Torgiano winery, has been named “Winemaker of the Year” by the Corriere della Sera’s Guide to the 100 Best Wines and Winemakers of Italy 2027. The award was presented to her at the book launch by Luciano Ferraro, deputy editor of the Corriere della Sera, who edits the Guide annually alongside James Suckling, one of the world’s most authoritative wine critics.
Chiara Lungarotti
Ferraro described Chiara Lungarotti as “the guardian of Umbria for her commitment to preserving the landscape and promoting the potential of this region”. This accolade also celebrates the Lungarotti family’s deep connection with the region, forged by the founder Giorgio Lungarotti and his wife Maria Grazia Marchetti, the creator of the Torgiano Wine Museum and the Olive and Olive Oil Museum. Since the 1970s, the family has made the combination of wine and culture a defining feature of its identity, helping to raise Umbria’s profile through iconic labels such as Rubesco and Torre di Giano, both launched in 1962.
Over the past two years, Chiara Lungarotti and her team have embarked on a journey of development and innovation by launching Progetto 62, which takes its name from the first vintage of Rubesco and Torre di Giano – Lungarotti’s two flagship wines, both launched in 1962.
The new Rubesco 62 and Torre di Giano 62 have been reimagined in both form and substance and now stand out for their more contemporary, very modern style, whilst remaining true to their heritage. Lungarotti’s latest project, launched this year, involves the rebranding of the Montefalco estate. Marking this rebranding is a new name for the winery – now called Tenuta Brancalupo – and the creation of a new wine: a white made from Trebbiano Spoletino, which completes the range comprising the reds Montefalco Rosso and Sagrantino.
“I am honoured to receive this highly significant award,” emphasised Chiara Lungarotti, managing director of the family business, “which recognises the constant efforts of the whole team in showcasing Umbria’s finest produce. We do this through our wines, but also through our cultural activities, with the aim of conveying the message that within every glass lies the story of a region, its grape varieties, its traditions, and also its way of experiencing conviviality. Umbria – a land of ancient crafts, unspoilt landscapes and a slow pace of life – has always been at the heart of our narrative: not just as a physical place, but as a way of life to be shared with the world.”
A key player in the history of Italian wine, Lungarotti continues today, at its estates in Torgiano and Montefalco, an entrepreneurial and cultural journey spanning three generations, combining tradition, expertise and a vision capable of looking to the future without losing touch with its roots. It is no coincidence that the company logo bears the words ‘Radici in Umbria’ (Roots in Umbria).
About Lungarotti
Lungarotti, a historic Umbrian wine-producing estate, has helped shape the history of Italian wine around the world. It was Giorgio Lungarotti who, in the post-war period, transformed the family farm in Torgiano into a successful winery. This story continues today at the estates in Torgiano and Montefalco, thanks to the dedication, passion and expertise of three generations of the family. With the ‘Progetto 1962’, launched in 2025, a new chapter has begun for the company as it returns to its roots to tell a new, contemporary story. The vision of Project 62 – which takes its name from the first vintage of Rubesco and Torre di Giano, the two iconic labels that have been reimagined in both form and substance – is clear and ambitious: to bring Umbria and its slow-paced way of life to the world by offering timeless, terroir-driven wines. Among the company’s cornerstones are wine tourism and the promotion of the culture of wine, olive oil and artistic heritage through the Wine Museum and the Museum of the Olive Tree and Olive Oil in Torgiano. www.lungarotti.it
