A Liverpool restaurant that welcomes more than 3,000 people every week has announced a major menu change. Located on Stanley Street, Casa Italia first opened its doors in 1976.

For decades it has served authentic Italian cuisine to the people of Liverpool, welcoming generations of Scousers through its doors for casual meals or celebrations.

The restaurant has always been part of Arran Campolucci-Bordi’s life, having remained in his family since his grandad, Mario, took over from original owner Giuliano Sherini in 1985.

Arran told the ECHO: “The Casa Italia opened in 1976 and was the first Italian in Liverpool. So, it introduced Italian food to the people of Liverpool. So people potentially haven’t had a pizza or pasta before. I know that’s weird to say now, but back then it just wasn’t a thing.

“It was opened by a guy called Giuliano Sherini, who was an amazing guy. My nonno, Mario, bought the business in about 1985, and we’ve had it in our family since then. So it started with Mario and then my dad, Carlo, and then me. So I’ve been running it now for 15 years.”

Now, at the age of 36, Arran is at the helm of the much-loved family-run restaurant and the team has decided to launch a brand new breakfast menu, starting from Saturday, October 31.

Arran told the ECHO: “It’s something we’ve wanted to do for a while but we’ve just been too busy with other things. We’re coming into the winter period so we feel like this is a good time to start it and we’re excited to do it.”

The breakfast menu will be served every Saturday and Sunday from 9am until 12pm, and will feature a Full Inglese, Italian eggs, Eggs Benedict and Eggs Royale on focaccia. There will also be a variety of flavoured croissants, hot drinks, juices and breakfast cocktails on offer.

The team has high hopes for the launch of their breakfast menu and Arran thinks it will be popular with customers. He said: “One of the reasons we wanted to do it is because we saw how popular breakfast is in the city so I think it’ll be well received and people are going to like it.”

Casa Italia recently celebrated its 50th anniversary by surprising customers with a return to 1976 prices for one-day only. Arran said: “It was brilliant. We didn’t advertise when the date was going to be so we had our normal customers and people who had booked it for their birthday and things like that.”

Arran said they kept their normal menus out for customers to order from so it was only when people received their bill that it was revealed to be the 1976 prices.

He said: “It was almost exactly 90% off and we gave everyone a copy of our original 1976 menu with their bill. People were really surprised and a lot of people were looking at their bill and thinking there was some kind of mistake.

“I was there with my family and we had a little celebration upstairs. All the waiters wore the same uniforms from 1976 with the old blue shirts and ties so it was a really good day.”
