The American classic that went global

Few fast-food meals are as instantly recognizable as a McDonald’s burger paired with golden fries. Whether you’re grabbing a Big Mac during your lunch break or treating the kids to a Happy Meal, the Golden Arches have become part of everyday American life.

That familiarity now extends across more than 100 countries. By June 30, 2026, McDonald’s had expanded to 46,028 restaurants worldwide, showing just how far its burger-and-fries tradition has traveled.

KFC’s Fried Chicken

There’s something comforting about a bucket of crispy fried chicken, especially when it’s shared around the dinner table. KFC has taken that American-style experience to international markets, where fried chicken remains central to its identity.

The Kentucky-born chain operated almost 34,000 restaurants across 149 countries and territories at the end of 2025. Remarkably, about 90% of those locations were outside the United States, making KFC one of America’s most internationally established fast-food brands.

Burger King’s Whopper

A flame-grilled burger with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and sauce is hard to resist when hunger strikes. Burger King’s signature Whopper has been a familiar choice for American burger lovers for decades.

The chain has also developed a massive international presence. Its parent company, Restaurant Brands International, reported 19,900 Burger King restaurants across 126 countries and territories at the end of 2025. More than 12,000 of those restaurants were outside the United States and Canada.

Pizza Hut’s Cheesy Pizzas

Pizza night is practically an American tradition. Whether it’s a family gathering, football night or a Friday evening when nobody wants to cook, ordering a hot pizza is an easy way to bring everyone together.

Pizza Hut has carried that convenience around the world. At the end of 2025, the chain had 19,974 restaurants in 108 countries and territories, with 68% of its locations operating internationally.

Domino’s Delivery Pizza

Few things beat opening a pizza box while the cheese is still hot. Domino’s built its reputation around making pizza ordering convenient, and that idea has traveled well beyond American neighborhoods.

Its 2025 annual report recorded more than 22,100 stores worldwide, including 14,956 international locations. International stores also generated billions in retail sales that year.

Popeyes’ Louisiana-Style Chicken

Crispy chicken, bold seasoning, and Southern-inspired flavors have helped Popeyes establish a distinct identity in America’s crowded fast-food market. Its fried chicken and chicken sandwiches offer something different for customers who want more than another burger.

The Louisiana-founded chain has increasingly taken those flavors overseas. At the end of 2025, Popeyes operated 5,413 restaurants in 51 countries and territories, including 1,835 locations outside the United States and Canada.
