France and Italy have traded the title of the world’s biggest wine producer 27 times since 1961. Only three countries ever made the most wine: Italy, France and Spain, which led for a single year in 2013. France’s longest run lasted 9 years, from 1999 to 2007. In 2023 France is back on top with 4.76 million tonnes of wine. Data: FAO, processed by Our World in Data.
