John Gorka is perhaps the quintessential iconic singer-songwriter of the 80s and 90s folk scene. Hailing from New Jersey, but forged in the Greenwich Village Fast Folk scene, he honed his craft and persona into an unmistakable image. The shy, wry, insightful, and yes, sensitive singer-songwriter has been copied and parodied. But the old coat he wove still fits, and still suits him well. The old songs ring as true as they ever did, and the new ones are just as good.
Concerning his new album project, “unentitled,” Gorka has commented: “Writing songs is my way of trying to make some sense of the world. In terms of the songs on the record, we need to work for hope and we need others to realize that hope. Justice does seem to hesitate, but even kings are laid low, bison can return to prairies, and aging cowboys can fall in love. I think there is hope for us all, but these are not easy times. It is my desire that some of these songs will make you feel that you aren’t the only one going through a rough patch, and if you fight for them, that there are better days ahead!”
Many well-known artists have recorded and/or performed John Gorka songs, including Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith, Mary Black and Maura O’Connell. John has graced the stage of Austin City Limits, Mountain Stage, etown and has appeared on CNN. His song Where No Monuments Stand was featured in the documentary Every War Has Two Losers, about activist and Oregon Poet Laureate William Stafford (1914-1993).
John has performed at the Night Eagle Cafe many times over the years and we look forward to welcoming him to the new Night Eagle.

Since the founding of the U.S in 1776, what role have the Haudenosaunee played in the history and culture of NY State? What relationships have been maintained between the United States, Canada, and the Haudenosaunee over these years? What issues still face the Haudenosaunee today as they struggle to maintain culture, land, language, and tradition in an ever-changing world? This presentation will highlight how the Haudenosaunee were shaped by, and contributed to, the growing country, and how they adapted to the changing technology and government policies that shape our world.
Perry Ground is a Turtle Clan member of the Onondaga Nation of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy. He has been telling stories for over 25 years as a means of educating people aboutthe culture, beliefs, and history of the Haudenosaunee.

Perry Ground, a storyteller from the Turtle Clan of the Onondaga Nation of the Haudenosaunee, will visit us again with an informative slideshow presentation will show about how the founding documents and principles of the United States government were influenced by ideas found among the Haudenosaunee. Perry Ground has been a storyteller and educator for over 25 years. He enjoys working with people of all ages to teach about the history & culture of Native Peoples. His presentations are lively, engaging, inclusive and filled with cultural and historical information that audiences young and old will enjoy. At this event, participants will learn about the Peacemaker, the story of how the Five Nations joined together, and how the Great Law of Peace guides their traditional form of government. Discussion about the Founding Fathers (such as Benjamin Franklin and George Washington), American relationships with the Haudenosaunee, how Native ideas influenced the Constitution and other foundational principles of democracy, and symbols that highlight this influence will be included.

Join Greg Nelson for a workshop about small scale, DIY solar installations for home use. Greg Nelson has been sharing knowledge about small-scale DIY solar installations for increased resilience. He recently worked with Living Energy Farm (LEF) to install systems at a workshop in Vermont. Built using 8 salvaged solar panels, this system provides refrigeration, cooking, lighting, and ways to charge laptops and power tools to a small off-grid community’s common building.
Greg has been part of Danby Resilience Community where he presented at last fall’s Resilience Fair, along with a deep-dive four-part series at The Soil Factory in Ithaca. This October he will speak about these solutions at the Radically Rural conference in New Hampshire.
