Pummarola Pizzeria Napoletana. {Sharon Aron Baron}

A new pizzeria with roots tracing back to Naples, Italy, has arrived in Coral Springs.

Pummarola Pizzeria Napoletana opened on August 12 at 6240 Coral Ridge Drive, Suite 115, in the space formerly occupied by Scuola Vecchia, bringing its wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizzas and Italian dishes to northwest Coral Springs. The restaurant is open daily, with hours from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

The Coral Springs restaurant, managed by Daniele Sella, is the latest South Florida location for the family-owned Pummarola brand, which was revived by four brothers inspired by their grandmother, Rosa Donna Rummo.

According to the company’s website, Rummo founded the original Pummarola in Naples in 1968 after becoming known in her neighborhood for the meals she prepared for family, friends and neighbors. She drove a small red Fiat 500 that locals said resembled a “pummarola,” the Neapolitan word for tomato.

After Rummo died and the original restaurant closed, her four grandchildren eventually decided to revive the family business and expand the concept. The red Fiat remains part of Pummarola’s identity and can be found in its restaurants as a tribute to their grandmother.

Pummarola specializes in traditional Neapolitan-style pizza prepared in wood-fired ovens handcrafted in Italy. The company says its pizzas are made with plum tomatoes imported from Italy, whole-milk mozzarella from Italian farmers and Italian Polselli flour. The pizzas are designed with the traditional Neapolitan combination of a soft center and crisp, fire-kissed edges.

The menu extends beyond pizza, with fresh pasta, sandwiches, salads, sides and desserts. The company also offers takeout, delivery and catering services.

Pummarola has received recognition for its pizza-making credentials. Chef Pasquale Mormile won the Pizza Napoletana Division at the 2023 International Pizza Expo & Conference in Las Vegas, according to the company’s website.

The brand also offers pizza-making classes at several of its South Florida restaurants, teaching guests how to prepare dough, stretch it, add toppings and create Neapolitan-style pizza. Pummarola also operates a mobile catering service featuring wood-fired ovens imported from Naples.

In addition to Coral Springs, Pummarola has established South Florida locations in communities including Boca Raton, Coral Gables, Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

The new Pummarola Coral Springs location can be reached at  954-899-4759. The restaurant joins the new Generoso’s Italian Sandwich Shop and Espresso Bar in the plaza.
