Has the overall GMM mood changed?
When I was in Florence I just crossed the bridge to the old,quiet non toutisty part and found a restaurant with seemingly locals eating there and it was excellent. Stunning city!

9:55 – You should've been less reservation centered and just eaten and "regular" places! I was in Italy in September 2019, and all the food I had was lovely, all at just plain, ordinary restaurants. And at one point, in Milan, I ventured to an outdoor bar near the Duomo, was seated overlooking the plaza, asked for a glass of wine, and was treated to a series of little tapas to go with them. Usually, I lose weight when I vacation because of all the walking I do, but this time around, I was lucky not to gain.

Florence also has schiaccata; a filled 'squashed' sandwich made with foccacia. Always hunt the backstreets for genuine restaurants.

When my friend and I went to Italy, we stayed in Florence and our hotel told us about a very small restaurant way far from the tourist areas…he said it's where all the locals go. We had a chicken and potatoes dish and it was delicious. However, all the Americans were seated upstairs and the Italians were having a great time on the ground floor.
I feel like you did no research on this trip. We made zero reservations in Italy and ate like royalty.

Agreed I went to Italy twice and their food is good but you have to know where to eat to find good pizza, pasta, breads and cheeses. Wine is good everywhere thankfully lol aswell as the Gelato 🙂

I literally just got back from Rome and Amalfi/Positano and Rhett is right the food was good but nothing special sadly
Positano is the most beautiful thing in the world and the water is lovely
If only it was "cool" in America to have "immigrants go home" bumper stickers like it is in Italy.
the best restaurants in italy are tiny places where some nonna is making amazing things for a bunch of people and you dont need reservations. everything that needs reservations is just hyped up nonsense. you can get really good food everywhere in europe, but you need to ask locals and not google. and you have to be spontaneous and walk through hidden alleys where no tourist would ever go.
I think people who complain about american tourists are so stuck up. The world cup has shown we can coexist and enjoy each others countries.
I love Florence! You definitely need to do some research to find the good places to eat if you’re in a touristy city.
If Rhett goes back, I’d recommend he go to the Lake Como area. Lots of cool places to explore!

No, Rhett is right. Italian food is better in Italy because you're surrounded by beautiful places and beautiful people, not because it's that much better than real Italian places here.

how to vacation in (southern) Europe: don't plan anything, don't make reservations. just go, wander around, follow the locals and go to the places where the menu's are in the local language only (preferably). they'll help you translate. stay AWAY from the restaurants with celebrities on the walls and people outside with menus coaxing you to come eat at their restaurant. you'll have a much better time food-wise! not a dig at your comment that LA has great food too, I believe you! but I do feel like there's better options than the ones you had 😘 (wild boar in Florence sounds like one of those great options, well done =p)
