Does a 30-year-old Bordeaux actually beat a $121 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon?

Certified Sommelier John Alanis drinks both full bottles to find out — and the answer is not what you expect.

Forget the snort-taste-spit reviews. This is a Whole Bottle Review — the only honest way to evaluate wine. I’m Certified Sommelier John Alanis, and tonight I’m pouring a 1996 Poujeaux Bordeaux against a Bevan Cellars Napa Cabernet Sauvignon to answer a question wine drinkers have debated for decades: does Old World Bordeaux wine age into something better than California’s finest — or is aged Bordeaux just an expensive myth?

Using my 5-Step Sommelier Method — Sight, Nose, Palate, Integration, and the Whole Bottle Score — we track both wines through every sip, every glass, and every revelation that only comes from drinking the entire bottle.🍷

WHAT WE COVER IN THIS VIDEO:
✔ The 5-Step wine tasting method — and why single sips always lie
✔ Does aged Bordeaux wine actually improve with 30 years in the bottle?
✔ Why Napa Valley Cabernet dominates the 100-point wine scoring system
✔ The Whole Bottle Score: how a wine evolves from first pour to last drop
✔ A Nostradamus-style prediction — and whether it actually comes true
✔ Old World vs New World wine: what the real difference tastes like in your glass

Learn wine tasting from a certified sommelier who’s been doing this for 12 years — no snobbery, no jargon, just honest red wine education you can actually use

  1. I recently got the 2021 Bevan Ontogeny and am excited to try it because how you described it matches what I enjoy in reds!

  2. As a lifelong Bordeaux lover, I’d take a well-stored 30-year-old Left Bank Bordeaux over most young Napa Cabs every day of the week. The layers of cedar, graphite, earth, tobacco, and mineral complexity simply can’t be replicated by heavily extracted, oak-driven wines that often sell for twice the price.

  3. Drinking a 2007 Nuit Saint George premier cru(Thibault Liger-Belair) while watching this, cheers 🥂

  4. Whole……Bottle……Review!! Enough said!!! Love these videos. Not really a Napa guy, but have to admit that I've been on a bit of a kick lately. Picked up a few $75 plus Napa Cabs along with a Casa Medero Cab from Mexico that was stellar! Have a few Bordeauxs I stll need to open!! Love these whole bottle reviews John! Appreciate the content! Cheers!🍷
