Tuscany produces some of the world’s most famous wines, but understanding the region becomes much easier once you know a few key terms.
At the center of everything is Sangiovese, Tuscany’s signature grape. It’s known for bright cherry notes, earthy character, and vibrant acidity that pairs beautifully with food.
Next is Chianti Classico. The easiest way to identify it is by the black rooster symbol on the bottle. That mark shows the wine comes from the historic core of the Chianti region.
Then there’s Brunello di Montalcino, one of Tuscany’s most prestigious wines. It must be made from 100% Sangiovese and aged for years before release, giving it complexity, structure, and longevity.
Finally, Super Tuscans changed the game by breaking traditional blending rules, often incorporating international grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot alongside local varieties.
Once you understand these four ideas, navigating Tuscan wine becomes far less intimidating.
