I’m sitting inside Mercato Storico Albinelli in Modena, Italy — one of the most historic food markets in Emilia-Romagna, the region many Italians consider the heart of Italian food culture.

What fascinates me here is not only the food itself, but the lifestyle and culture surrounding it.

Fresh pasta.
Seafood.
Parmigiano-Reggiano.
Salumi.
Wine.
Small vendors.
People sitting together talking, eating, shopping, lingering, and participating in daily life.

Markets like this are not only about buying food.

They help preserve rhythm, social connection, regional identity, craftsmanship, and traditions that many parts of the modern world have slowly lost.

One of the things I notice most in Italy is that food is still connected to real life here.

And honestly, I think that’s one of the reasons so many people feel emotionally different when they come to Italy.
