What is life like in one of Italy’s poorest regions? 🇮🇹
In this video, I visit a small village in southern Italy to show a side of the country that most tourists never see. When people think of Italy, they imagine places like Rome or Milan – but life in rural southern villages is completely different.
Here, the streets are quiet, many houses are decades old, and a lot of young people have moved away to bigger cities or other countries in search of work. But despite the economic struggles, these villages still have something special: strong community, deep traditions, and a slower pace of life.
Walking through the village, you’ll see everyday life – local homes, small streets, and the countryside that surrounds this part of southern Italy. It’s simple, peaceful, and full of history.
This is a look at a side of Italy that most travelers never experience.
Would you live in a place like this? Let me know in the comments.
📍 Location: Sorianello, Italy

It would be interesting to see what people eat every day there. Maybe ask someone to teach us a dish 😊
I think I have fallen in love with you.
Poor, empty but hot people.Beautiful landscape.Thank you for this beautiful video.
Said it by a Romanian.
Such a beautiful country!
What a beautiful place, with such a beautiful history. Thank you for sharing it with us. 😍
Favalosa!
Its amazing how the people built this town on that hill…beautiful country, luminous light…but the allure of the new world and a better standard of living pulled them away…destroying the way of living of the indigenous peoples. I was once there…living on and around the Great Lakes and Great Prairies. I met Russell Means before he passed away…he starred in the Last of the Mohicans. Many of the natives suffered so badly due to the wiles and ways of the white man. These tribes lived a simple life, but were one with the ways of Nature…and so did not tarnish the Temple of God for which they knew they were stewards of. Most folk would be overjoyed to live in a place like this town…yet everywhere we look, the lure of the glitzy glamorous life and neon lights calls them…and some do well, but not everyone…and after all, is money everything. Even in the UK, communities have been dying…for capitalism is ruthless, it has no sympathy or empathy, it only knows financial indexes and markets…commercial markets…and the fast buck. And people blindly follow the $ signs, forgetting the state of their spirits…and the beauty of their homelands. These are stories that are being repeated all over the world…of the deepest sorrow and grief, all for a system that will bring a tragic end to the world…for it is akin to an insatiable beast whose long talons ensure they teat you apart if you try and withdraw from its proximity. Such a beautiful place…and lovely sweet people…and lemon trees. Aaaahhhh…such beauty.
Calabria is known for its water
I was in Calabro a smaller town of Soriano for a month
Thank you for sharing. My parents are from Calabria. My father from Serra Pedace and my mother from Celico. They immigrated to California, where I was born and raised. But I grew up with many Calabria traditions.
What beautiful little village. The view was incredible and felt so peaceful and at ease. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you Irene for showing us your town. It was very interesting to learn about your town and Italian history. I will look out for more of your videos. Do you have the mafia down there in Calabria.
why don't u try filming with cosmo pocket camera and get a drone u will make a wonderful content "diverse"
Another great video by the beautiful Irene. What a lovely friendly elderly lady. She was so welcoming. This would never happen in my area.
I love your videos. You make me want to visit Calabria for the landscapes, the history and the people. Also, the woman at the end of the video was such a sweetheart
Your last words of "it's full of beginnings" could come true if people started moving there instead of leaving.
In fact the whole south of Italy, from Campania and below to Sicily and also Sardegna can be very attractive for foreigners moving there.
Since 2019 there are special tax rules allowing people to move to these provinces, to towns/communes with less than 30.000 inhabitants, where they can settle and only pay (!) 7% tax on ALL their foreign revenues (pensions and other income).
This option is valid for 10 years. Since housing there is very affordable, just like the other costs of living, and you can, for an acceptable fee, be covered within the health system, this could be a very attractive option for foreign pensioners.
I don't think the locals would mind if people came repopulating and renovating in these partly abandoned villages!
Irene. Thank you for creating this insight. Truly very interesting and such a beautiful and historic setting.
Not to be An idiot. I now lost respect for Italy after what meloni betrayed the USA and my family from my Dad side landed in Rhode island in 1896.theres millions of Italian Americans are disappointed with Meloni and so am I. I was going to move in Italy 6 more years for my retirement. If my family from my Italian side from the past alive will be so disgusted with Meloni. What ashamed to see Meloni threw all this in drain .
WELCOME TO INDONESIA 🇮🇩😚🥳🥰
