🇮🇹 Manarola – The Most Photographed Village in Cinque Terre
Our walking journey begins in Manarola, arguably the most famous and photographed village of the Cinque Terre. With its vibrant houses cascading down a black rock ravine toward the Ligurian Sea, Manarola feels like a scene from a fairytale—timeless, colorful, and impossibly beautiful.
Believed to be the oldest of the five towns, Manarola’s history is carved into its stone walls and narrow caruggi (alleyways). At the heart of the village stands the Church of San Lorenzo, a striking Ligurian Gothic structure dating back to 1338, adorned with a magnificent rose window that catches the afternoon light.
Above the village, the famous Via dell’Amore (Path of Love) begins—a romantic cliffside walkway connecting Manarola to its neighbor, Riomaggiore. While parts may be under restoration, the spirit of this legendary path lingers in every viewpoint.
We’ll wander through the lively harbor, where local fishermen still pull in their boats and families gather along the rocky shoreline. You’ll hear the gentle lapping of waves, the cheerful conversations echoing off ancient stone, and the occasional train rumbling through the tunnel behind the village—a reminder that this peaceful paradise is still very much alive.
Above us, terraced vineyards stretch toward the sky, sustained by dry-stone walls built centuries ago. These slopes produce the famed Sciacchetrà wine, a sweet nectar that captures the essence of this sun-drenched coast.
