Man vs Beam | Wood beam install for open plan kitchen

The restoration in Italy continues with demolishing a wall to open up the kitchen into the open plan dining area. I install a wooden beam by myself and make quite a mess with the brick cutter and sledge hammer. Want to know how to fit a beam properl – learn from my mistakes.

  1. Hello everyone.

Apologies for the false start video yesterday which was intended to sit as a channel intro video for new viewers…but thank you for all the funny comments.

Grab a glass of wine for the second part and enjoy the battle….

Experts out there, please be kind commenting on my technique! The great news is that this is all in place and rock solid today. Result! 😂🙌

    Cheers all. Richard.

  2. Good job. Was massage time after that I’m sure. Was thinking lower the centre part where it was catching a bit (and on yr fingers) as that was coming out anyway. But easy to say from my comfy position. Great effort.

  3. Amazing job you did Richard
Hoping you are being careful in all this heavy lifting
Hope Dennis can help you with your property but not be very expensive
Take care and see you in the next video
    🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

  4. Not proud of it but I know my language would have been more colourful wrestling with that beam. Good on you for your self control or editing skills.

  5. Crikey Richard. What a battle that was !! You said grab a glass of wine but I ended up drinking half a bottle in sympathy with you…. Good job.

  6. Yeah!!! I clapped when you got that sucker in!!! My back is aching just watching it 😉😊 Good job! Nice bottle of Primitivo 😊 Enjoy!

  7. played – shame its not a square section to even the support…but…. make sure you 'pack it' as best you can otherwise it's just a 'stick in a wall' supporting nothing – and the cracks might turn up. Also doesn't have to be 'tight-tight' cos that will expand and contract (which is why you pack it with material that isn't heat responsive… but it's not much of a wall, maybe.

  8. Hard work Richard! This episode reminds me of Lee Dorsey's song "Working in the Coal Mine": hammering, lots of dust, supporting beams. I admire your will to persevere.

  9. Well done with the beam mate, it did make me laugh a few times as it reminded me of previous renovations ive done here in Stockport (struggling doing two man jobs on my own) 😂
I visited Northern Italy many times years ago & your videos have reminded me of some great trips I had.

  10. ok if your going to do this diy you might as well invest in a decent set of tools that will speed up the work ( dewalt , Bosh, Makita)well worth the money and less time hurting your self

  11. If you do that all by yourself you are a legend. May God bless you. Find a good place nearby I'll be your neighbour and give you hand. In fact we are looking for the (right) place in that part of the world

  12. This has become one of my favourite channels, just discovered it yesterday, and got hooked! It is as much a voyage of self discovery as it is another Italian home renovation journey, and it is easy to become attached and start cheering you on, well done you!

But please, don't measure your progress against Martjin, he is supremely fit from his epic transcontinental bicycling adventures, and his artist's eye gives him the ability to see outside the box and visualise problems and solutions we mere mortals have to discover by hands on trial and error.

I have discovered that sitting at a desk tapping on a keyboard is one of the worst thing we can do to our bodies, regaining physical strength and balance takes time!

  13. Hello Richard, watching from N. Wales. I'm trying to decide where to buy a rural property and I'm been looking at Portugal but just extended my search to Italy and came across you. What made you choose Italy?
