IS THIS THE BEST ZOO EVER?

In our latest video, we’re asking if this is the best zoo ever?

We’re back to our California series of videos and we couldn’t be more excited!

After traveling to San Diego and getting settled in our hotel, we spent the first day doing things in downtown San Diego, like dining in Little Italy and giving our hotel room review at Springhill Suites.
You can catch those videos in our San Diego Playlist here:

Now, we’re spending the day at the San Diego Zoo. This zoo has a reputation for being one of the best in the country. Is this true? What did we think of it? Well, tune in to find out! And stay tuned for part 2 of the San Diego Zoo series coming up next!

Hi everyone I’m Jen and I’m Joe Jen and Joe on the go can you guess where we’re going we’re going here what does that say Jen I can’t read it it’s backwards that says the San Diego Zoo this was not planned this was a totally spontaneous decision today

Yeah so we were back and forth on what we were going to do today you’re like ah should we do this should we do that we’re going to do this H let’s go to the zoo why not let’s just do it it’s like an iconic San Diego thing to do yeah so

We’re here we’re about to we just got here uh we had a really nice Uber ride with uh the driver gave us a little bit of information on bboa Park uh the Museum District so now we’re at the zoo about to get on the bus and do this

Little bus tour of the zoo which is here so let’s get moving we’ll check in in just a bit admission for the two of us for two adults it was $127 it does include the Skyliner and it includes the bus tour and we’re about to hop on the

Bus tour G get on the bus Gus yeah basically let’s go let’s go we’re on the magical tour bus we are but not a Disney tour bus a San Diego Zoo tour bus and we’re going to go see some aminals we are and we’re going to

Take you along with us join us for the ride oh here we go all right can better understand these animals and help integrate the needs of the tigers with the needs of the people and the local communities nearby so that’s just a little bit about the research that we’re

Do with our Tigers if you want to learn more about our research in general you can do so see our tiger out on tour everybody so GL we got Lisa Glen some you got a pretty good view here so let’s keep it rolling though we got places to go animals to

See our carbon footprint now you can do that in a variety of ways some easy ones you could carpool to work or school walk around on our tour too all right well we made the sky is a quick 4minute tiles and our Wildlife Wonder show that’s going to be happening

At 2:00 today so we they really got a wide range there all right all bad jokes aside here on our right our African lions definitely steal the show we got well we’re going to have to be really quiet when we pass by the lines we don’t want to scare them away

Okay so let’s lower our voices here all right cuz Miss Ellen she just got up and walked away okay so she’s going to be up here up by me all the way on the other side of the habitat now Lions they may be one of the most important animals we have here at

The San Diego Zoo just because that’s what founded our zoo and it all goes back to 1916 when California was celebrating the opening of the ca uh Panama Canal with a California Panama Exposition and by doing so well we built the bell tower you can see in baloa park

And we also had some vendors bringing exotic animals to show off like the lion all right I see some fingers pointing so you haven’t found her yet she to be right up here by me really close to our bus she’s laying in the sunshine right

Here okay so we’re going to go by nice and slow now the reason why I like to play this deadly little game is because Jaguars are Ambush Predators so just because you can’t see an niry that does not mean that she can’t see you hiding

Is what she does best so as we go by you’ll notice she is much smaller than the Lions you just saw next door she’s really only about a fifth of their size she weighs like 85 90 lb but that Su there’s an ambush Predator being as

Strong small as she is it helps her get up in those trees that you see sneak up on her prey and attack she’s our oldest elephant here at about 42 years old and then around the corner hopefully we’ll get to see sunu and Ne so shaba she’s

Right here in the center by the utilit over there you know as we start to the elephant yard you’re going to notice all these weird looking objects in there and all these weird looking objects have a purpose of course these are our elephants enrichment devices so for

Instance if you look just above shaba you’ll see that big ball at the top and on the ball there’s a hole and in the hole we place hay which is food for our elephants so what we’re doing is we’re encouraging our elephants to use their brain and manipulate and move the

Muscles in their trunk in order to reach up and grab the food that’s hidden inside these various enrichment devices shop is kind of showcasing that for us right now too she’s shaking that chain which you can hear and that releases her food hay now of course we don’t feed

Them Hay all day long okay that’s no fun they also get a nice balanced diet of things like Roma lead and their own Healthcare that means that we don’t use sedatives or tranquilizers or anything like that to perform basic husbandry techniques just like their vanny petties

But also we can perform blood draws from their ear flops too so I just think that’s really cool old and they’re half brothers so they’re always on the same side of the yard together and they get along really really well sometimes you’ll see them practice fite which is

Always fun to watch creates a big cloud of dust I’ve seen them feed each other before adorable they like to roll around the mud and play in the pool so these guys know a good time let me tell you now they actually asked us the zoo for

Our help here because like we just briefly talked about the care center we built up all this trust with our animals using that positive reinforcement so we can actually ask a mama elephant for her milk and we can analyze it and what we found from our research is that the mama

Elephant’s milk changes nutrient density over the baby elephant throat cycle and we also found that goat’s milk is pretty comparable to Elephant milk and it’s a bit more accessible too so we share this information with the retti elephant sanctuary and in return they give us some valuable information about elephant

Habitat Behavior community and so stay tuned because at the safari park in 2025 we’re going to be opening up elephant Valley and that’s going to Showcase all that we’ve learned from them and our collaboration anybody happen to know what the two humped camels are called those ones are the Dr so the two

Humped would be the factory camels that’s okay and what about the camels with three humps anyone know what those are called no yes that’s a pregnant camel of course duh of power Wilderness and wildness that’s right I’m talking about our California Condors now in the 1980s we

Nearly lost these magestic birds in fact there less Condors out there in the world than there are people on the lower level of this bus right now there are about 30 left on Earth but there is some good news to this because we were able to partner up with the California condor

Recovery program and we started what’s called a species survival plan which a lot of the here at the zoo are a part of and what that is it’s really not too unlike online dating actually kind of like an e Harmony for wildlife if you will look at this cuteness we got a baby

Bear on the left and then we got M I know they’re always putting on a show over here these two little ones have so much energy sometimes you’ll see them run around play together just doing goofy stuff they’re pretty now just gave her these two little BL balls back on December

It’s almost been a year already can’t believe it but you know what for the first few months ala was staying way back in her cave she’s getting them nice and strong and within the last like maybe 6 months or so here at the zoo the whole family’s been coming out the

Babies have been learning how to climb they’re exploring they’re playing they’re being adorable and I think Ela has done such a good job I mean look at them so adorable now this is a huge step in conservation everybody because andyan bears are critically end danger so to

Have these two little nuggets born here at the same G Zoo that’s a pretty big deal what’s next you may ask well Alba will stay with her young for about a year that’s how long they stay together out there in the wild and then after a year has passed these two will likely

Move on to another Zoo to continue their legacy to continue that species survival plan that’s kind of what’s next in store andian bears are super cool they’re very unique Bears they’re actually the only bear found in the southern hemisphere um and they’re AR Boral bear so that means

They like to climb trees just like you see Elba right now at the top of her tree and they’re one of those few bears that will climb the tree all the way up to the top and then snap the branches off of that tree in order to make their

Bed for the night so I think they’re really cool all right well unfortunately we do have to take off at some point I know it’s hard to buy local meat Dairy produce local anything really you’re able to save our rainforest because by buying locally you’re ensuring the f is not coming from a

Rainforest so one of the options or ways to get around the park is this kangaroo bus you’ll look for the yellow kangaroo signs there are several numbered for the different kangaroo bus stops but they’re usually yellow buses and it’ll say kangaroo bus on them it’s just another way to get around the

Park no cool Hey Jen come and look at what I found a flambo of it’s a flamboyance of stinky flamingos yeah Jen you found the giraffes so there’s carot Sab and oh I love them so much it’s feeding time San Diego Zoo we’re in another line what are we doing

What are we waiting for we’re hoping to feed the giraffes so what are we waiting for the Line open what’s the line for to feed the drafts but what are we actually waiting for to get a ticket what does it’s more than getting a ticket you’re

Going to get a biscuit you’re going to give the giraffe a biscuit not sure what the biscuit is made out of we’ll find out I personally thought it would be a piece of lettuce but I guess it’s a biscuit I don’t know maybe it ISO butter butter cup cookie I don’t

Know oh there are the giraffes are you excited about feeding the giraffes I’m very excited this is like a bucket list thing for me I hope you get giraffe saliva all over your Hand i’m ready are you ready yeah feed with your left hand and it’ll be better yeah for the camera ready I’m ready if you’re ready that wasn’t too bad was it oh it’s kind of kind of slobbery kind of all right you wanted man you’re welcome a another one walking towards

You there he is looks very fluffy picking grass he’s very fluffy so this I think is a gal from Ethiopia very pretty he’s eating grass oh look at that big one at the end that’s like King Kong they’re going into eat probably that was so freaky Out Oh [Applause]
