Sara, an IT professional & Stephen a graphic designer and artist are world-traveling Canadians who dreamt of moving to Europe, and France in particular. In 2020 they were working from home when Stephen turned to Sara and popped the question she was longing to hear, “What would have to be true for us to buy a chateau in France?” They searched online for months viewing hundreds of properties. They narrowed their search and toured some properties when they happened upon the one that captured our hearts, Château de Saint-Germain-des-Prés. A year later they made the move to France to start their new adventure in our beautiful Château. They created “Manor and Maker” to reflect the two sides of their adventure. One, to live as chateau owners with all the ups and downs and two, to pursue their passions as makers, creating art in all its forms. They will invite others to come together, united by their passions, to share in this adventure. We invite you to join us too, as we bring our dreams to life. Welcome to Manor & Maker.

Welcome back to the chatau de senterman de pre where this week we are starting a number of projects and then going out for a couple of Tours wow holy crap I can walk in how exciting is that I might have I might have put a bug

In Jason and Joey’s ear to say if there was a chance to maybe make some space in the garage for you oh look I can actually get to my tools so exciting it’s a good rain day yeah no kidding thank you guys so much no worries I mean

There’s a lot of crap that needs to go away but but now there’s room for more crap I mean room to work let’s clear let’s clear out the crap before we fill it up again shall we yeah exactly exactly yeah and deal with some some of the stuff it’s amazing work

Thank you guys yeah yeah this is this is awesome it’s not a hazard to get in there and get something no exactly no this is this is great I can actually see stuff hey look we have one of those yeah we do we have tools here we don’t really need help

Closing the door I just couldn’t wait to show you so you know I snuck you out too you did yeah I sneaky So today’s job is the patio as you can see got quite a bit of weed and damage at the end here it’s falling in into what appears to be an old storm water collection pit so we’re going to Ripple that up tidy up all of this

Weed and hopefully make a nice little Su deck for the summer we’ve shown you before that the ground Salon here has two French doors two sets of French doors that lead out to this Terrace but the Terrace itself we figured need well it does need a tremendous amount of work and uh

Fortunately the volunteers have actually done a great job of opening up the first major problem area so you know you can see here these are all of the paving stones that are on the Terrace um but there was a Structure underneath here that had obviously

Collapsed what it looks to be is that it was another uh water store at some point because there’s uh walls here and here and the drain here would have come down from the eaves troughs uh and into this area and you can see these beams that are

Here they were um obviously they were structurally across and these bricks were laid in as a top and then the paving stones on top of that those supports those iron supports are obviously now corroding and breaking away so we need to figure out now do we

Maybe just fill in this area with um Earth sand Stone um clean fill essentially get it up to a level where we can then put the stones back down the paving stones back down so that this will now be a a nice solid area then we

Can clean up all of the rest of the stones here we do need to do some leveling um so we’ll have to pull these Stones up basically level the ground below and then put them back down uh and then this Terrace can be used which

Would be great it’ be great if we could get this space um you know nice and comfortable for people because coming out of the salon it’s a it’s a lovely spot particularly in the evenings to sit and have a cocktail and a chat and plus you get the view of the village down

Here and This Magnificent magnolia tree that you know blooms with white flowers in the midsummer time so anyway the process is underway they’ve done an amazing job so far uh of of opening up now we can see what the problem is next phase is figuring out how to shore it up and then

We’ll get the stones back down and make this more functional very exciting all right we got the hole cleaned out time to fill it back in and pave on top just going to use all this construction waste In between jobs the volunteers had a chance to tour around our beautiful area of France Jason and Joey had their own car so we toured Molly around in hours and we had a chance to take her out to some of the prettiest villages in France L PLO Village to France it’s an official

Program and there are over 30 criteria that these towns have to meet what do we think of this ladies and gents it’s amazing it started raining but it’s just really getting more epic it’s really I mean it’s getting medieval let what a pretty town this is this is Dumb the most significant criter area or that it has to be fewer than 2,000 people in the town and there have to be two culturally significant items in the village at least one is a historic Monument so for example in sanan decole you have the chat de Maroni which is a

Historic Monument the other great thing about these little towns is that they quite often have their own little festivals so again in sanjan De it’s the Flor they are of course as it says on the tin absolutely beautiful and absolutely worth visiting but you can expect of

Course a lot of other people there during the high season so I’m sure a lot of you already knew about this program but for those who didn’t and are planning a trip to France it’s it’s absolutely worth looking up the PLO vage website and uh checking out some that are in your area What you got excitement we have got our wallpaper delivery oh can I look and again we’re going with the art newo theme which I know doesn’t please a lot of you but uh o I like it oh wow it’s got nice death to it yeah do you approve

Of the illustration I do excellent here let’s do that so my my inspo for this one was the dark blue and gold of the L porcelain yeah yeah I actually quite like that the thing I really like about these kind of wallpapers is see there’s a a texture in

The background here M right so you got a a dark field you’ve got this little texture and what that does is it just lifts all the rest of the graphics up so it has a bit of a dimensional feel to it right so that’s a that’s something that

I look for but I quite like it what do you think I’m excited to see how this looks when it gets up on a wall can you lift up a whole strip again yeah oh yeah I love the scale of it Molly and I are going to get cracking so some of you

Will have seen that when we went to the Brant uh a couple weeks ago we picked up this Copper Pot that has already been converted to a sink yeah um and we’re going to put that in this bathroom and I think that’s really quite nice don’t you like it it’s it’s a warm

Tone but it sort of fits nicely with the rest of the ballpaper I I think that’s going to look really quite nice I would I would love it if the the lines here were just a little bit more of the copper tone but I think it’s pretty

Close yeah and even like this color yeah you know the little bits in here are a bit more propy yeah but it compliments the blue really nicely I think you know it’s a really nice combination yeah so yeah I think that’s look great all right that awful

Color is finally going away that’s very very exciting yes although I can’t reach the ceiling so all right yeah that is a bit of a tricky bit that’s okay we’ll sort that out don’t you worry today we’re making bad choices yes we are we are doing wallpaper before we

Paint the uh pipes there are reasons for this which I won’t go into but basically it’s mostly to show you what not to do right important reasons exactly so um there’s two of us in this tiny little bathroom uh it’s not like tiny there’s room for two more at least there’s a

Whole other room yeah according to the um Rave we had there’s room for at least four more we won’t go into that um yeah but we’ll get the wallpaper Done Do little WC they said it’ll be easy they said there’s a lot of giggling going on up here oh no it’s like past that delium yeah oh really can I see how it’s coming are asleep and yeah it’s um all right let’s have a look ah looking nice look

Closely I like the paper a lot I do too yeah hi my name is Rene Shoemaker I’m a textile artist I live in oison France I’m American and uh I would like to invite you to come learn the fine technique of painting on silk it’s a fabulous

Technique that anyone can do and it gives you such beautiful reward because the silk is so beautiful and in these in these in my paintings I often paint architecture and places um for the memory of being in those places and working on the silk with these colors would be so beautiful and the

Castle here look at this wallpaper that’s so inspiring and as I was saying I often to architecture because I like a sense of place but we will look together we will look and see what’s in our environment use the flowers use the vegetation use the architecture and create

Something we’re so excited to have you here and show you the place and I’m super excited about this weekend it should be amazing with your your talent because you do have a lot of um Workshop experience and that we’ll bring the chefs in and it’ll just oh my gosh and

The chef’s will it’s icing on the cake thank you so much for the imitation I can’t wait to invite others to your beautiful chat or a particular yellow and I find when I’m painting that when I put one color down that’s going to inform the next color okay so I can’t

Really say or I want a particular blue or a particular um green because it’s what the color is that goes on with silk is going to inform the choice for the next color and so this is as you can see if we hold it up to the light it’s

Pretty cool eh uh iridescent and shimmery and um so this is coffee because we love coffee and um this is a house in fettin front but I love quirky architecture in France it’s Cory architecture this scene is from New York City it’s a yarn shop um in the village this is a

Medieval building a medieval house in pelan France oh fantastic this is back to the Village in New York City gr Village this is Italy this is in uh urbino Italy this is a madeup this is this is an invented scene so let me see if I can

Get it without the shadows and here’s another pretty pretty combination well that’s you’ve seen I’m a sucker for the ocean tones so yeah that’s gorgeous and then what’s so nice here is the dye has the colors in the mixed dye blue have migrated out a little bit here here and

They create a different color and on the edges here so it’s a it’s very much a magical technique because the dye creates its own Universe yeah I hear Echoes of that in um the ENC costic work that we’ve done here sometimes the medium makes its own choices right right like you sort of

You start in One Direction and then part of your your learning and growth as an artist is is to let the medium also do some work right to let it speak to you that you’re not controlling exactly yeah yeah which is a really great great way

Of learning to sort of release and and let go control mhm around the edge and again the technique is this is a resist line mhm the white the white lines you see are a resist line that you add as if it was a drawing and then you paint the

Dyes into this area with a paintbrush into the little areas you’ve created it feels attainable to me cuz I’m not you know my my area is more the uh the sewing side of things but I feel like I feel that’s attainable for me as a beginner it would be it’s it’s very easy

In in a way also it’s like coloring by numbers yeah but you get to create your own colors so maybe when we run your weekend you could bring a big piece and we could hang it here because we do do the art installations maybe we could you know if

You want we’ve got the dining room right and it’s set up to do multiple hangings so and it’s the the reason we did the neutral backdrop was to be able to have pieces like this so what lovely inspiration for people to dine with your pieces around there let’s do that really

Yes yeah we will okay will I love yeah I mean I love all the colors it is it is magical is it it though I mean the way the sparkle in the sunlight well and you know you’ve got me a textile right right the reason we have so many to be

  1. I don’t know much about fill dirt but I do know you want a slight incline away from the building so the water will drain to the lawn and not the building.

  2. Love the new wallpaper for the bathroom. Is it William Morris…or a WM inspired paper?
As the silk artist was talking about her class I couldn't help but look at the beautiful garden inspired wallpaper. I was thinking about how I wished there were more birds in the graphic facing different directions and at varying heights. Then I thought…."piece of cake"….we have a graphic artist in the house. Steve why don't you create additional birds and paste them in other places on your paper…you could make it even more beautiful and unique. Just a thought!🙂

  3. The water drainage from roof needs to be directed somewhere not sand and fill this is critical

  4. I had another thought. As an art teacher and decorator, I find that it is so important to have continuity between rooms in design and color. The flow is so much nicer when it is all complementary. Have fun!

  5. Once again the views you share are truly amazing and I am always thankful when you share them. How nice to have such amazing volunteers and passionate artists who visit your home and share their skills. Such a blessing.

  6. On the bricked patio, perhaps continue the drain pipe across the patio underneath the tiles out out to the lawn?

  7. In your garage to the left, if you swapped places with the tools and the table, you could mount a board and hang the tools to get them more out of the way. How nice to have help. You guys are so generous with your time showing tge volunteers around. I can imagine all kinds of nightmares painting those pipes after doing the wallpaper . 🫣 Yikes, please tell us why you did that. The copper pot looked beautiful next to the wallpaper. That wallpaper is gorgeous!

  8. Love the wallpaper for the bathroom. The sink copper pot is interesting. The silk painting look amazing. The audience boys need to stay long. They are awesome, as is Molly. Looking forward to the chef. ❤

  9. Remove all the hard pavers and repack the terrace with hardcourt gravel…reuse the pavers as the edge for the garden re design. Ensure that u use a textile matt to prevent weeds on the upper terrace. Save save … gravel an be re graded each year and pavers will defin garden edge and stop grass growth in garden beds

  10. I love your videos….. when your video started this morning i laughed so hard i split my morning coffee – its so Canadian to have a garage so full it becomes giant storage 😂😂😂😂😂 reminded me of mine that i am currently clearing out 🇨🇦

  11. Maybe run the downspout under ground and out to a barrel to catch the water instead of having it go into the terrace.before covering the terrace back.

  12. The cistern was in almost every older homes. I have wondered about that. I grew up with a cistern for our water usage. We did not have good wellwater.

  13. You need to reroute that down pipe though as you don’t want the rainwater accumulating in that area under the paving stones and create damage, it needs an outlet not just building up under the patio. Can’t it be rerouted to the town drainage system, if there is any?
