Criminal acts of hate and intimidation must have no space in our city and the Toronto police service has been unwavering in our determination to restore the sense of Public Safety detailing a disturbing Trend that doesn’t seem to be going away tonight concerns over an increase in hate

Related crimes in our city and the growing number of protests that have taken over our streets good evening strong words today from Toronto’s chief of police speaking out about recent acts of hate and efforts to respond to protests he says are escalating and becoming more confrontational ctv’s

Allison HST joined us live from Toronto police headquarters tonight with the story Allison Chief demq outlined all of this at the this morning’s Toronto police board meeting where he highlighted the role he believes police have and will continue to act on to keep the community safe following weeks of demonstrations

Toronto police are Banning future protests on the Avenue Road overpass over Highway 401 in the heart of the Jewish Community demonstrations or the congregation of people on the Avenue Road bridge over the 401 will not be permitted if it becomes necessary people can expect to be arrested across the

City there have been hundreds of demonstrations since the October 7th Attack Toronto police have managed an unprecedented 308 protests and demonstrations that are escalating and becoming more confrontational creating significant public safety concerns Chief myON demu told the police board anti-semitic hate crimes accounted for the most of any

Other category last year and they’ll be leaving their command centers in the Bon Shepard and bathers and Glen Karen areas we’re we’re a small population we’re less than 4% of the the the people the population here in Toronto and yet we were targeted by 37% of all hate crime in the city last

Year that’s that’s an alarming rate a recent example the arson at the Jewish own Deli in North York City councilors have since called on Ottawa to investigate it as terrorism hate is escalating in our city we’re very grateful to police uh for the resources they’ve deployed to address this

Concerning Trend following a protest on Sunday near Queen and Bay Toronto police arrested a 41-year-old for allegedly carrying a flag of a listed terrorist organization he faces a charge of public incitement of hatred since October 54 people have been arrested and 117 charges laid for what officers allege

Were hate motivated incidents what we’re seeing from the Toronto police is a continued trend of criminalizing um and uh repression directed at uh Palestinian and uh protesters or protesters coming out against the Gen on side of the Palestinian people youth Palestinian movement member Dalia Awad says the escalation is coming from the

Police she points to the December 10th arrest of a protester that appears to show an officer with his knee on the suspect’s neck a claimed Toronto police deny the lack of safety for these protesters is because of the increased policing um and the police’s intention to criminalize these protests police say

Last year there were 35 reported anti-muslim Palestinian Arab hate crimes compared to 12 12 the year before four protesters from the Eglington Lawrence neighborhood did go back to that overpass location they’ve been at demonstrations there before and they went back with a sign and to deliver a message this happened just in

The last half hour and while they were there a small group was approached by two police officers there was a brief conversation between them and the police and then the group packed up and left they did give a brief statement to Media saying they found the ban on protesting

At the overpass alarm called it an affront to civil liberties and freedom of expression and they say that they chose that location because of its accessibility to them because they live in the neighborhood and for its visibility reporting live I’m Allison Hurst Nathan back to you all right thank

You Allison still ahead The Fallout after a CTV News investigation shows dozens of convicted criminals released early because of inhumane conditions at a Toronto jail that’s coming up but first we turn to a national call for Action doctors sound the alarm over ER weight times right across the country

Health Providers stretched to the Limit with patients left as the victims of a system in crisis ctv’s Queens power bureau chief Siobhan Morris joins us with a message from the medical field and the political push for change well some hospitals are warning patients upfront now that they are in

For a long wait if they show up to the ER the Canadian Medical Association feels the public is growing weary waiting for Change and to be seen it was a a panic inducing ordeal for the dad of a newborn running a fever trying to stay away from an emergency

Department he knew was overcrowded I called tahal to avoid going going there altogether and you know they advised us to go he rushed his 2 and a half week old son to a hospital North of Toronto it took an hour just for us to see a

Triage nurse it felt like we were at a meat counter waiting for our number to be called it took more than 8 hours for the infant to be admitted his story w from the qet emergency rooms that have been longer and longer this is probably

The worst I’ve seen in my 15 20 years of of being in medicine the problem no longer in isolated pockets it’s every emergency department it’s 24 hours a day uh and the challenges are uh are not getting better one in five Canadians don’t have a family doctor so they’re

Leaning on hospitals where the weights in some parts of the country can be as long as 20 hours we need to have more capacity particularly in Staffing you know covering staff uh shortages when people are ill right now is a is a tremendous challenge a spokesperson for Ontario’s minister of Health says the

Province is adding a record number of nurses spending tens of millions more to address Staffing shortages and she stresses Ontario is leading the country with some of the shortest weight times in Canada all of the measures that the government says that they are taking are not good enough Ontario’s opposition NDP

Wants the government to end what it says is consistent over Reliance on uh private Staffing private nursing agencies uh which cost an enormous amount and are hemorrhaging Healthcare dollars out of our our public Healthcare System there are also calls to end a court Challenge on legislation that capped public sector wages and to

Establish a safe nurse to Patient Care ratio we need to expand urgent care centers that are close to emergency departments we need to expand virtual urgent care to speed up access to medical help the NDP wants the government to recall the legislature more than a month early

To deal with some of these issues and there’s no indication the government will follow through with that reporting live from Queens Park I’m sioban Morris Nathan and Michelle back to you all right thank you Siobhan also tonight the worst in North America and third worst in the world the new study confirming

What most drivers have already believed about traffic congestion in Toronto but first the sky has settled from earlier today when we got another of wet snow Al live look this hour at our city skyline there is still the chance of flurries maybe some drizzle but rather Calm before the next system

Heading our way arrived Jessica Smith is here with a look at the current conditions how are they looking Jess it’s okay right now enjoy the Calm before the storm quite literally rolls in into the end of the day tomorrow the bulk of that snow as Michelle mentioned

Has moved its way out we have a break uh a reprieve as we head through the evening and into the bulk of the day tomorrow before the system makes its way in we’re still relatively as we head in towards the beginning of our night through Pearson over towards the island

Still sitting at 2 degrees the windchill not so much of a factor as we head through the overnight dropping down to minus three it’ll feel like minus 7 but we are watching that system I’ll have all those details coming up Nathan thank you thanks so how was your commute

Tonight if you got stuck in traffic you’re likely not alone a new study confirms what many of us already know Toronto is among the worst in the world when it comes to congestion on the roads ctv’s Janice Golding joins us with all the details JIS hi Michelle yes you could forget LA

Or New York City Toronto is the worst city to get around in in North America and I can tell you people are pretty frustrated if you do any driving in Toronto the findings of a new traffic congestion study probably won’t come as a shock it’s Bud horrible horrible it

Doesn’t surprise me that Toronto is ranked number three in the world in terms of congestion I’ve driven in a lot of cities around the world world and uh Toronto is pretty bad in fact according to the TomTom traffic index which looks at traffic Trends in nearly 400 cities

On six continents the worst traffic congestion exists in London England which took the top spot Dublin Ireland was in second place Toronto Canada rounded out the top three with Milan Italy and Lima Peru coming in fourth and fifth respectively Tom Cruz has commented on how hard it is to get

Around this city Professor Matty simia tii from UFT says anyone who drives in the city knows how hard it is to get around we are stuck in gridlock we’re doing construction everywhere then there’s more cars on the road as more people move to our region and we just

Haven’t been able to build enough public transit or provide people enough other Alternatives the TomTom study found in fact that while it takes around 37 minutes 20 seconds to travel a typical 10 kilometers in London and 29 and A2 minutes to travel the same distance in Dublin it takes 29 minutes in Toronto

We’re doing construction everywhere all at once uh that’s creating localized gridlock and then there’s just the bigger issue we have a series of highways that have no Road tools on them like in many other cities that means that you have more people using them the past three months was terrible because

Of the pylons and all the construction on all that it gets tough at times the the construction is definitely a big impact and it’s worse during rush hour in the mornings the average travel speed is 19 km per hour meaning it takes 31 minutes to travel 10 km and in the

Evenings it’s even slower travel speed drops to 17 kmph and it takes 35 minutes to move 10 km so only got worse and worse the drives turned from an hour to 3 Toronto is a very busy City especially at this time of day moreover the study estimates the average time commuters

Lost annually in Toronto traffic during rush hours last year is 98 hours or more than 4 days of their lives and that’s nearly 7 hours longer than the year before the worst day in time to travel well that would be Wednesday between 5: and 6:00 p.m. when it takes on average

38 minutes to travel 10 kilometers reporting live I’m Janice Golding now back to Nathan all right thank you Janice a transport truck and another vehicle were left lying on the roadside after a collision this afternoon on the 401 in Whitby it happened in the westbound Lanes near Thon Road

Thankfully only minor injuries were reported two right lanes are blocked causing traffic slowdowns in the area police have said to expect delays during the cleanup meantime Toronto police are trying to track down the occupants of this vehicle that crashed in Riverdale early this morning emergency crews responded to the scene near Carla and

Dan forth at around 440 a.m. they say the people in that SUV fled a traffic light was knocked down and lanes were closed for a few hours for repairs and the investigation really really fortunate it was in a big open area unfortunately it was underground and three people were

Transported to hospital for health checks after they were exposed to toxic gas at a condo construction site it happened this morning on Esther Shiner Boulevard near lesli and Shepard workers were mixing epoxy in the underground parking and a chemical reaction released hazardous gas the chemicals were brought

Outside to air out the ministry of labor has been advised Toronto property owners are still digesting news of a major tax increase being proposed by city council a whopping 10.5% hike is a tough pill to swallow but how does our city compare with our neighbors to the West ctv’s

Beth Mell joins us live with that story Beth Nathan Toronto’s proposed property tax is higher than what was approved in Miss Saga and Brampton if you own a home in Toronto it’s likely you paid less than your Miss aaga counterparts last year in A Tale of Two Cities two of the province’s

Powerhouses with very different tax bills in 2023 a home valued at nearly $700,000 in Toronto racked up around 4600 in taxes while a home in Miss Saga with the same value was build around 6,100 but that could soon change with Toronto’s mayor saying it’s time to fix the financial mess a $1.8 billion

Shortfall the city is proposing a 10 1 12% increase costing the average homeowner $372 more dollars this year and if the feds don’t come through with money for Asylum claimants that could Spike to 165% for 36 years my mother kept the taxes reasonable and made an economic Powerhouse when business owner and Son

Of former mayor Hazel McAllan looks at Toronto’s numbers he sees an opportunity for Toronto businesses to come to miss Saga we want to make it certain that they’re going to be sustainable property tax taxes reasonable and well spent value for money taxes although each City’s property taxes cover different

Services Toronto’s proposed tax increase for 2024 is higher than Miss saga’s although each City’s property taxes cover different Services Toronto’s proposed tax increase for 2024 is higher than Miss saga’s Miss saga’s proposed hike combined with Peele regions increase for 2024 is over 7% cost in the average owner $400 more this year

Brampton’s rate is also combined with peel people there could pay around $360 more people we spoke with about Toronto’s increase either seem to fear it it’s really bad for the renters and if they if they raise the the uh salary and then it’ll be covered but really sad really sad to hear that

These are major percentage points that you’re taking out of people’s uh every every day uh lives or accept it I’m fine with a katchup it’s difficult for a lot of people but it’s necessary to get Toronto out of the red the city says people can weigh in about these proposed property tax

Increases through telephone Town Halls which will include the mayor and budget chair as well as in-person consultations in North York at tobaco Scar brro and at City Hall in January reporting live I’m Beth Mell now back to Nathan all right thank you Beth Toronto police have arrested a 12-year-old boy

In connection with a stabbing last night in the East End at around 10 p.m. investigators say a Suspect with a knife entered a store near D forth Victoria Park he allegedly demanded cash and chased an employee outside before stabbing them in the back the victim’s injuries were not life-threatening

Police police took the 12-year-old boy into custody and he faces assault robbery and mischief charges Miami Gardens Police say they haven’t made any arrest so far the murder of an Ontario man killed after uh attending an NFL game 30-year-old Dylan Isaac from Six Nations was in town for the Miami

Dolphins Buffalo Bills game Sunday night he was shot and killed in an alleged altercation with a motorist who pulled out a gun Miami Gardens Police say they’ve seized a vehicle and identified a person of interest but haven’t taken that person into custody Dylan Isaac’s family will hold a funeral on Saturday in

Onandaga we have an update on a story we first brought you last night A CTV News investigation to what’s being called Guantanamo South judges reducing the sentences of dozens of criminals over concerns about the conditions at the Toronto self detention center today ctv’s John Woodward pressed Ontario solicitor general on the issue the

People of Ontario always deserve to feel safe that’s Ontario solicitor general Michael Kerner announcing $25 million for a digital system to better track arrested people out on bail a system so high-tech it will be on officers phones this is not a game I am putting all the

Offenders on notice if you do not abide by your bail conditions the police will find you and put you back in jail often times that jail is the Toronto South Detention Center known as Guantanamo South where judges have found inmates experienced before their trials continuous and frequent lockdowns cells

Infested with ants cockroaches and spiders an infestation of mice as well as silverfish prompting judges to reduce their sentences on conviction by as little as a few days to as much as 2 years an action that demonstrates the Court’s condemnation of these conditions a review by CTV News found 24 cases

Where judges had reduced sentences of convicted criminals thanks to what they’re calling inhumane conditions at Toronto South including kidnappers Shooters and child pornographers all facing long lockdowns Staffing shortage Staffing shortage over and over again so the only conclusion one can draw is that the province has made a decision that

They are not going to properly fund the jails they are not going to hire the professional professionals they need to run the jails and the people that are in there are going to suffer what good is money here on the front end of the justice system if in the back end at the

Prisons uh we’re not spending the money to keep them there what I can tell you is that we have exceptional people who are correctional officers and everyone that keeps the correctional system safe the government says it’s hired hundreds of guards a disgusting Cesspool lawyers say they’ve not seen much change you

Can’t have on one hand wanting to jail people make it harder to get bail but then keep putting them in instit in an institution that is known to be inhumane because records show they’ll just get out sooner John Woodward CTV News the Toronto Public Library has continued

Operating despite the impacts of a Cyber attack last year on its online services we’re now learning about some of the steps staff have taken while the institution recovers the Toronto Public Library Shar this image of 12 trailers that have been used to store return materials ever since that October 28th

The latest coming up and I’m Pat 4 and coming up on consumer alert Apple has agreed to pay Canadians more than $14 million in a proposed class action settlement it has to do with batteries and older iPhones if you have one you could be entitled to a check for $150

I’ll have the details that story is just ahead just in time for the weekend another major weather maker this one staying more snow and prompting some special weather statements and some storm watches not quite for the GTA just yet but it is likely on the way coming up

I’ll have a full look at your long range forecast to help you map everything out and stay with us we have another full night of great programming for you right here on CTV following a scandal involving batteries in its iPhones Apple has agreed to pay can Ians more than $14 million under a proposed class action settlement if you own an older iPhone or you can prove that you did you could get a check in the mail Pat forign explains

On today’s consumer alert Pat thanks Michelle and Nathan it was known as battery gate the allegation was that Apple slowed down the operation of its iPhone so you would buy a new one well Apple has admitted no fault if you had an iPhone 6 or seven you could be entitled to

$150 Apple would probably rather be talking about its long awaited Vision Pro headset that will finally go on sale this year but instead it’s dealing with lawsuits connected to its iPhone 6 and 7 and Battery Gates now is the time to go looking through your dusty old drawers

For those old phones that you no longer use Tech analyst Cary Levy says the proposed settlement in Canada follows a similar lawsuit in the US where Apple paid consumers a half a billion dollars this was a global issue and unfortunately for Apple it’s going to

Have to write a lot of checks to settle it under the iPhone power management class action Apple will pay Canadians up to 14.4 million consumers will get $150 per affected phone it’s for anyone who owned an iPhone 6 or iPhone 7 who downloaded a new version of the IOS

Operating system before December 21st 2016 Apple face lawsuits after revealing software updates could slow down performance speeds on older phones some customers complained Apple was purposefully and knowingly releasing software updates that slowed performance speeds however in the settlement Apple claimed that was not the case as part of

This resolution Apple has denied any allegations that it deliberately slowed the devices down in order to force consumers to buy new ones uh and of course it assumes no fault here the settlement must be approved by the BC court at the end of the month if it is

Consumers will have to fill out a claim form with their older iPhone serial number something many people may no longer have you’ve either got to have the phone itself or record showing that you own the phone with that particular serial number if you traded it in uh and

Didn’t record that serial number or you sold it and didn’t hold on to that information you may be out of luck CTV News reached out to Apple Canada about the proposed settlement but did not receive a response and if you had an iPhone 6 or 7

But it’s long gone because you sold it or traded it in you might be able to find the serial number on an old contract or phone bill it may be worth looking into for $150 on your side I’m Pat for if you have a consumer story idea email us at alert

Ctv.ca to the forecast I’d say right now things are comfortable but mhm now this week we had a couple of storms to start the week then earlier today but this next storm that’s coming comes with cold temperatures it does it literally hits different the one earlier in the week

Was like a Texas low so that one became more of a rain event we saw that transition take place very early but this one it is going to be cold and it’s going to come with a lot more snow weather is brought to you by train the most reliable heating and cooling brand

It’s hard to stop a train now there are a number of things going on with our forecast through the Prairies there is cold Polar Arctic air that will eventually make its way towards us but we have to get through the storm system first we saw that light flurry activity

Early on maybe 2ish centimeters throughout the GTA but for the most part we are clear we’re done for now when it comes to the active weather we’re sitting at 2 here in the city but the further north they’re already experiencing that cool down it’s coming for us eventually as we head through the

Evening minus 3 it’ll feel like – 7 East of us they are looking at those double digit windchill kind of values getting into the day tomorrow again we are still above seasonal we’ll be at plus one with the wind chill feeling like – 6 we might

Even see just a hint of sunshine in the morning before cloud cover comes in the bulk of the system doesn’t hit until Friday night so we will get through our morning commutes and our evening commutes uh pretty good all things considered there’s that first system that brought the snow it moves out and

There it is it comes in Fast and Furious as we head into our Friday night and it’s the rate of snowfall 2 to 5 cmet per hour as the storm begins uh right around 7 p.m. and then carries us through the overnight again tonight not

So bad just some cloud cover out there a little bit of sunshine perhaps early on tomorrow and then it’s just a cloudy day day this really becomes an issue as we head in towards around 7:30 widespread flurries very wet very heavy snow through midnight into the early morning

Hours we could see a little transition over to rain and then it just turns back into Lake Effect flurry activity with this also comes really strong wind gust Friday night they could top out at maybe 70 80 kilometers an hour in some parts of Southern Ontario getting into Sunday

Just more Lake affects snow so this is kind of a multi-day event behind the system is significantly cooler air that cool air in the prairies it’s on its way for us generally we’re looking at about 5 to 10 cenm downtown north of the city east of the city they’re looking at that

10 to 15 and then areas out towards say bft could see 20 to 30 uh temperature- wise still very mild into the day tomorrow our Saturday again we’re right at that seasonal Mark it’s not until Sunday where we see that colder air really start to push in the chance of

Maybe a little freezing and then as we get in towards next week your Monday Tuesday Wednesday the sunshine finally returns but it is going to be cold those are daytime highs before or you factor in any kind of a windchill so the weekend bundle up for the snow next week

It’s going to be the cold Nathan all right thank you Jess well if the cold or weather hasn’t finally made it feel like winter maybe this will reservations are now open for the 20-year anniversary of Winterlicious the celebration of Toronto’s culinary scene will see more than 200 participating restaurants offer

  1. To racist commentator – ….suppose the real Indigenous Canadians want their Country back. And they start saying “Go back to where you came from occupiers!!”Israeli’s get confused because they don’t have a country. Palestinians be like “right on bro- I’m trying to go back home”

  2. It’s sad to see Jewish people being called “self hating Jew” by Zionist Israeli supporters. The Israeli occupation flags are not banned even though they are occupiers, child killers, and genocidal apartheid supporters.

  3. I dont think the court should be so highly concerned about conditions in toronto south. We can't let criminals out on the streets just because they don't like jail. This is why crime is rising in toronto.

  4. They are not 0/04 of population they are at least 0/35 of Toronto population the city of Vaughn and avenue road and York city are all Jewish

  5. Because Canada is complicit in the genocide being committed by Israel and our government wants to crush all opposition to the genocide, as usual

  6. And this is how Nazi Germany regime started , taking away your rights a little at a time in the name of safety, as for the Jewish community complaining well if you want to live in a free society get used to it as one day you might need Those same rights to protest

  7. Chowchow after chowchowing your wallets is getting a pay rise on her already $200k/yr..smart 10.5-16.5% tax rise for her this year to compensate for that salary increase..

  8. These rushes at services and instruction ARE tactics 101. Does anyone remember director of military intelligence presented himself announcing on all public tv 15+ yrs ago. Do you know what it means when a countrys military director speaks.

  9. We need to have more Doctors to help on Emergency patients. One of the reasons, that we have to wait longer is because most of the Hospitals have a single Dr.to treat an enormous number of patients. As I can see, we have a lot of unempowerd nurses to diagnose patient's of a minor nature. In my opinion, nurses should be empowered and trained to diagnose minor emergency situation Instead of waiting for a minimally present doctors. It's crazy to wait for more than 12 hours in triage to get treatment. Honestly, this shouldn't happen in a developed nation like Canada.

  10. South America 🇺🇸 Same on you. What you don't toke about your people when they died in Tunisia because of they're Christians. They left them to death in Sahara desert with out water and food adult and children Shame on you.

  11. They are not protests they are paid actors and professional agitators to scare the public.I hope they arrest the entire lot

  12. Traffic has been a problem long before protestors arrived, with this protestors gone did the traffic flow any better no, just another institution trying to attack mriginlize groups

  13. Police job is to only enforce, the city and province have to make laws, also maybe jews got 38% but Muslims got the test of 62% increase so don't give that BS

  14. How did those masked faces pro-Hams and Pro-Houthi get Visa?

They could return to their country and fight for their request.

  15. These protesters are very stubborn, they must abide with the laws of Canada. And protest with the laws.

  16. THANK YOU to our police officers 👏👏👏👏ENOUGH we all know and seen what happened on October 7rh

  17. We don’t want angry terror supporting immigrants destroying our way of life. Deport them back to the war they so want to fuel!
