2019 Caprera Le Vasche Montepulciano D’Abruzzo Italian Red Wine Tasting #winewithryan

2019 Caprera Le Vasche Montepulciano D’Abruzzo (14%) Italian Red Wine Tasting. This was a wine that surprised us and for the money might be one of the best value for wines we’ve sampled since 2013. It is made with 100% Montepulciano grapes….and these are stellar!

Tasting notes: medium to full bodied with “juicy” flavors of dark berries & blackberries. Tannin & sweetness level is moderate. There is nice acidity & a hint of vanilla/oak. Very elegant wine. On Vivino we would give this a 4/1-4.2/5. If you come across this wine, grab a bottle or two ($32 per bottle)….it’s that good!

From the winemaker website:

We hand-pick in small baskets in the first decade of October.
The grapes are de-stemmed.
The must ferments spontaneously with hole grapes in steel tanks.
During the maceration, we operate punching downs and déléstage upon necessity.
After bottling, it ages in the bottle for at least one year before going on sale.

It’s a fresh Montepulciano, very enjoyable but not simple. It has a balanced structured, with young and fresh red fruits notes and a good propensity to ageing.
Montepulciano is the king of Abruzzo wines, the best known and most popular. Thus, it is possibly the most reliable interpreter of the specific terroir where it originates.
