This is Italy in October 🍅🌊🇮🇹 The beach clubs are still open, the tomatoes in the Caprese salads are still ripe, and I’m still swimming in the sea.
Between Ischia and Sorrento, I’ve been enjoying stretching out my summer a little longer. Things are quieter at the end of the season, but there’s still plenty of sunshine and time for one more spritz by the water 🍹
I’m usually very reluctant to let summer go, and this part of my trip has done absolutely nothing to help. Swimming, long lunches, wandering through beautiful coastal towns and ordering tomatoes at every opportunity. I know autumn is here, but I’m happy to ignore that for a few more days.
If you’ve been wondering what Italy in October looks like, this is a little glimpse of my experience travelling through Campania in southern Italy. From Ischia’s beaches and colourful streets to Sorrento’s waterfront, I’ve still been finding plenty of opportunities for a swim and a lazy afternoon by the sea. These are the early October days I’ll be thinking about when I’m back in New York putting on a coat.
On Ischia, I’ve been enjoying island life, exploring Forio and Ischia Ponte, admiring the ceramics and soaking up the beautiful coastal scenery. Then it was on to Sorrento for more swimming, delicious Italian food and views across the Bay of Naples. Two very different places, both making it extremely difficult to accept that my Italian summer is coming to an end.
And of course, the food is a very big part of it. Caprese salads with ripe tomatoes and mozzarella, gnocchi alla Sorrentina, and a spritz by the water. Travelling around Italy as an artist and recipe developer means I’m constantly collecting ideas for my illustrated Italian cookbook and travel journal. Sometimes that means drawing. Sometimes it means ordering another plate of something delicious. Research is research 🍅🎨
This video captures my experience of Sorrento and Ischia at the end of the summer season and the beginning of autumn. Beach days in October! I feel very spoilt.
