Its amazing how we never think of varying some things. For instance, I have only made meat loaf. Never frigging occurred to me to make meat dogs that could fit in buns! I feel like I should just go back to bed.
This sent me down a weird rabbit hole. Where I found out a couple things I promise it’s pretty interesting Things I learned 1- Italians are kinda …racist (not sure if that’s the right word some even hate their own) 2- THOUSANDS of Americans with VERY Italian last names Olive skin second generation Americans where Grandparents born in Italy are doing their DNA tests and no Italian even comes up. Other Celtic /European countries do.
Apparently Italy as a country is relatively modern. It didn’t unify until 1861. Before that, the peninsula was a patchwork of regions constantly influenced by other groups, Greeks in the south, Arabs and North Africans in Sicily, Normans, Spanish, French, Austrians, and even earlier Celtic and Germanic tribes in the north. So genetically, “Italian” isn’t one clean category, it’s a blend of Mediterranean, Southern European, Balkan, Middle Eastern, and North African markers depending on the region.
People mix this up all the time, ethnicity and DNA categories are not the same thing. The biggest way to tell if you are of the ethnicity is language then religion culture and traditions- so I bet people in comments the past few videos gave you 💩 for considering yourself ethnicity Italian but not speaking the language? . When Google says “Italian ethnicity,” it’s talking about the human side of it, culture, language, traditions, and identity tied to Italy. That means NUMERO UNO speaking Italian, the food, the religion, the customs, and your family being from places like Sicily, Tuscany, or Naples. That is a real ethnicity, no question.
Scenario a Grandpa comes from Italy in WW2 to escape dictator he teaches kids and grand kids the language the recipes the seasonal traditions the grandkids in 2026 are ethnically Italian.
Scenario B Another grandpa raised in same Italian town on same boat to America marries someone who didn’t want to teach kids Italian didn’t share same religion didn’t teach old world nanas recipes don’t do the seasonal traditions is not ethnically Italians . Many American Italians were forced to Mary other American Italians and why there’s always “old Italy” neighborhoods in big cities back east coast mainly. Germanic and Irish Italian People in northern Italy are racist towards the Arab& North African Italians in Sicily today the same way American Italians who married American Italians and do Italian mass and all live on same street look weirdly at people who have a grandpa that was from Italy but didn’t preserve the culture
Well I thought you were from Spain, Puerto Rico, or the Dominican Republic (lol) so that’s that. You’re beautiful either way, just the way God made you
