In the US, teppanyaki is often called hibachi.
In Japan, these are not the same thing at all.
What many people in the US refer to as hibachi cooking, where a chef grills meat and vegetables on a flat iron plate in front of guests, is actually called teppanyaki in Japan. The word comes from teppan, meaning iron plate, and yaki, meaning grilled.
Hibachi, on the other hand, traditionally refers to a charcoal brazier. It is a heat source, not a cooking performance style. In Japan, hibachi is used for warming or for simple grilling over charcoal, and it looks very different from what most diners associate with the term overseas.
This video was filmed at Teppan Mahoroba in Shinsaibashi, Osaka, featuring a straightforward Wagyu teppanyaki lunch cooked on the iron plate. It is a clear example of what teppanyaki actually means in Japan, both in technique and in atmosphere.
