Okinawa’s post war comfort food is taco rice, a blend of Americanized taco meat, lettuce, cheese, tomato and rice. Served near military bases to please the American palate, it has become one of their own favorite local dishes.

  1. * A few side notes:
    1. I put the price in error. It is not $12.99, it is $11.99.
    2. I had to overdub over the original audio saying the brand of the hot sauce because I have a habit of nicknaming it El Yucatec, but wanted to say it correctly in case you wanted to find it yourself.

  2. Thanks for sharing this spot. It brings back memories from time that I spent there in Okinawa. I hope the restaurant does well to help out the Okinawan owners long term.

  3. Where did my comment go? Take 2: Looks good. Should be filling with the rice instead of just more salad/chips. I'll have to try that sauce out even if it looks radioactive. 😂

  4. I heard about taco rice from @champuru. The prices look very reasonable especially if the bag of Doritos is included. If I'm not mistaken, the restaurant is just before the new Wah Kun and Frog House (Korean-no actual frogs) restaurant as you head mauka on Kalakaua. Yeah, stoner food! 🤣

  5. Yo, Taco Rice in Hawaii. Something else on my checklist when I get back to The 808 (will be taking notes on your videos a few days before =-) Aloha and take care, Misty.

  6. Yes, back when I visited Okinawa there was a chain called King Taco that was very popular among the locals, it would be pretty crowded even late into the evening hours. I don't. remember them offering Doritos to add in but yes I'm sure that would add some awesome flavor to the meal even when you're not stoned! Glad that old Done location got a nice replacement that I can visit soon, especially when they start that vegetarian option that you showed on the menu.

  7. That's super hilarious you drizzle that El Yucateco Green Chile hot sauce on your salad. =-) Definitely a K-girl! I just ordered my Dad a bottle now, due to your stellar endorsement of their hot sauce.

  8. That was so narrow I thought you were going to side swipe your shoulders! lol. That El Yucateco sauce was everywhere in the Dominican Republic when I had to go for business. I would have gone hungry if it wasn't for that stuff as Dominican food was super bland. 🤘

  9. Taco rice looks pretty tasty. I heard spam fries is also popular in Okinawa. I'll have to try El Yucateco. Have a great Super Bowl Sunday.

  10. I saw that place last week when I was waiting for the bus. I live only across the street. When I saw that place, I though Taco on rice, just regular rice not Spanish rice?

  11. great vid, my wife is from Oki, wondered when taco rice would make it to Hawaii. We're on the mainland now, and make our own (yes cilantro onions and olives). I am definitely ordering some of that habanero green sauce! Aloha.

  12. Hey Misty! Looks great to us! As you mentioned, we saw this place highlighted in Charles' video and forgot about it til yours popped up. Adding this place to our list. Stoner food. LOL!!

  13. Love this kind of content 🙌
One small thought on the thumbnail: a tighter crop on the food or your reaction could help it stand out more on mobile.
    Either way, great video!

  14. 🙂 WOW ! ! ! Great share and find ! ! I wish I could get that here in PNWest… making me HUNGRY ALREADY Saturday Morning for Mexican 🙂 ALL the BEST and THANKS MUCH ! !

  15. I really like to make taco salad at home, but taco rice might be nice to try too. That looks fantastic and fresh, would definitely need hot sauce! Thanks for a great video!

  16. Aloha Missy, that is the kind of food I like. Such a simple yet ono meal. Next time I'm around that area I'm going to try to get some. God bless🤙

  17. So glad you reviewed this place! I keep passing by this place and saying I gotta check it out when it opens.🤙

  18. Ok Misty, you got me going! Just ordered some of that hot sauce you like. I like to put Tabasco on everything but anxious to try this one! Love taco rice!!! Have a good weekend 🙋🏻‍♂️👊🏽
