  1. So glad you included an Italian white wine! The wealth of indigenous white grapes throughout Italy to explore shouldn’t be overlooked!

  2. Great selections! Compared to reds, white wines of great quality under $40 are easier to find.

Dry Rieslings are my favorite white wine grape. Before it got wrecked by private equity sabotage, Chateau Ste. Michelle's 2021 Dry Riesling was a phenomenal wine that caught my attention when a Master of Wine and also Matthew Horkey were floored by it in a blind tasting. It is really durable (still enjoying my last bottle that was originally opened in mid-2024 and savored periodically while in-and-out of my fridge) and compares well against other big names (average price being upwards of $58) from Germany and Austria (Brundlmayer's Terrassen 2022, which was also highly enjoyable) as well as single-vineyard ones from Napa and Mendocino–despite its starting price UNDER $10!

The 2022 Dönnhoff Tonschiefer Riesling Dry Slate is another favorite in the price range, and it has the distinction of being standing up to the most intense of oily fish flavors!

One of my favorite under-$40 non-Riesling white wines has been the 2022 Domäne Wachau Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Achleiten, which was absolutely concentrated and delicious! While Wine-Searcher lists its average as $49, Total Wine's starting price was $20 at the time of purchase!

Speaking of Italian white wines, Alto Adige's "entry"-level wines of respected wineries really deliver for UNDER $25:
    – 2023 Elena Walch Pinot Grigio
    – 2022 Cantina Terlan Pinot Bianco Tradition

Not too far away from Alto Adige in Veneto is 2023 Cantina Prà 'Otto' Soave Classico.

Another favorite is the 2022 Bodegas Jorge Ordoñez 'Botani' Old Vines Moscatel, which has the lovely floral aromatics of muscat grapes but with a dry finish.

Though not generally a fan of the grape, the Diatom Chardonnay (2023) was a joy, stylistically closer to the brighter, higher acid crisp white versus the stereotypical malolactic-oak monsters.
