Pompeii had around 80 street-food counters called thermopolia, and many Romans living in small apartments without a proper kitchen ate out. In 2020 a fully painted counter was uncovered in Pompeii’s Regio V, decorated with a rooster, two hanging ducks and a leashed dog, with traces of duck, pork, goat, fish and snails in its jars.
