A new Italian wine bar serving family-produced Sicilian wines and traditional dishes has opened in North Yorkshire.

Veeno welcomed its first customers at the Treadmills development, Northallerton, on October 15 following a launch event attended by the Mayor and the business community.

It is Veeno’s first North Yorkshire venue and has created around 10 jobs.

Husband and wife Chris and Sherryl Fernandes own the restaurant and wine bar and say residents have given them overwhelming support.

Mr Fernandes said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have officially opened our doors in Northallerton.

“It’s been a lot of hard work getting to this point, so to finally welcome people into the venue and see them enjoying the food, wine and atmosphere is a fantastic feeling.

“Northallerton is a brilliant town with a really strong sense of community, and the support we’ve received from local businesses and residents has been incredible.”

The bar serves Italian dishes, sharing platters, pasta, pinsa flatbreads and desserts, alongside a wine menu focused on Sicilian bottles.

Its signature dishes include tiramisu made from Veeno founder Nino Caruso’s grandmother’s original recipe.

Wine is at the heart of the business, with bottles sourced from the Caruso family’s Caruso & Minini vineyard and winery in Marsala, on Sicily’s west coast.

The vineyard has been in the Caruso family for four generations and inspired Nino to launch Veeno in Manchester in 2013.

He said: “When we launched Veeno in 2013, our ambition was to share our family’s Sicilian wines and the Italian tradition of bringing people together over great food and drink.

“To see that vision continuing to grow in towns and cities across the UK is something we’re incredibly proud of.”

Visitors can book guided tastings including “A Trip to Sicily”, pairing five Sicilian wines with Italian food, and “Quattro Vini”, with wines served alongside artisan meats, cheeses and bruschetta.

He said: “It’s wonderful to see another new business opening in Northallerton and bringing something different to the town’s hospitality offering.

“Treadmills has become an important part of Northallerton’s development, and it’s encouraging to see businesses continuing to invest here.”

Veeno’s arrival is the latest addition to the growing food, drink and leisure offer at Treadmills, the redevelopment of Northallerton’s former prison site.
