It’s hard to imagine a meal that can go from the refrigerator to the dinner table with the same sort of speed one expects at a drive-thru window, but such magical menus do exist. Stopping by a local Costco, one such product can be found in the prepared foods section: a saucy Tuscan Style Chicken Piccata from Sabatino’s. It’s perhaps not the most traditional chicken piccata recipe, but for the speed and ease, we can certainly let that slide.
Chicken piccata is an Italian-American staple that typically features thin chicken cutlets dredged in flour and pan fried before being finished with a sauce made from butter, lemon, and capers. The lemon is bright and acidic while the butter is rich, all balancing beautifully alongside the crisp chicken as capers provide a wonderful, salty pop. Sabatino’s version has a few major differences. First off, the recipe is gluten-free. This is certainly a plus for customers who aren’t able to eat regular chicken piccata.
The other selling point of this gluten-free Costco prepared meal is its speed. According to the package instructions, whether it’s being prepared on the stovetop or in the microwave, it needs a maximum of four minutes to be ready to eat. It is, however, not an exceptionally large amount of food on its own. In order to feed the whole family, customer reviews suggest it’s best to serve it alongside pasta, potatoes, or crusty bread.

Reviews are mixed for Sabatino’s Tuscan Style Chicken Piccata
Carmen Varner/Tasting Table
In a stark departure from a traditional chicken piccata recipe, this Sabatino’s product contains dairy, beef, and sun-dried tomatoes. It’s perhaps why the company chose to call this product Tuscan Style, as all three of those ingredients are quite unusual for the dish. It is almost as if the recipe is attempting to bridge the gap between chicken piccata and Marry Me Chicken, that famous dish drowning in creamy sun-dried tomato sauce.
Overall, the reviews for this Sabatino’s Tuscan Style Chicken Piccata trend mixed to bad, including our own here at Tasting Table. It was a clear pass in our rating of 11 Italian food products from Costco, with the reviewer taking special note of the unappealing “brick” of chicken inside the package. The sauce, too, was considered a reason to skip this classic Italian product from Costco, as it can come out as something of a watery mess.
As with just about any product reaching so many mouths, however, there are some that love it and some that hate it, with those who buy it expecting the familiar butter-lemon-caper sauce the most often disappointed. “There isn’t a hint of piccata flavor,” writes one such dissatisfied buyer in the Costco comments. Others, though, enjoy the ample quantity of sauce and don’t mind the differences. “It isn’t really lemony, but the sauce is delicious, and the chicken is so tender and tasty,” writes another buyer. What no one can argue with, though, is its convenience. Arriving in a 32-ounce package for just about $14, depending on the location, and requiring only a few minutes to travel from refrigerator to dinner table, it is just about as convenient as dinner can get.
