Luigi’s Al Fresco will welcome its first customers from 5pm on Saturday, October 17, after months of work on the High Street building.

Emily Scarpino and Giovanni Dello have transformed it into a Mediterranean-inspired venue with tiles from Italy and Spain, earthy colours and rustic Italian styling.

It comes after a major transformation of a 500-year-old town centre building.

Delays and unexpected challenges at the historic building pushed the project beyond its planned completion time.

Speaking ahead of the opening, Emily Scarpino said: “It’s been intense, as a lot needed doing in the building.

“It’s been quite stressful, I’m not going to lie, but we’re really pleased with the result.

“We are very proud.”

The opening is the next step for Luigi’s, which previously operated from a smaller site on Market Hill.

After losing a planning battle to allow al fresco dining, the team looks forward to having more flexibility in the new premises.

Ms Scarpino added: “We always wanted this spot and we were so pleased that we actually managed to get it.

“We’re really excited – it will be nice to get everyone back.”

The new venue has created 10 new jobs, mostly employing people from the Maldon area.

More than 100 diners can eat indoors, with further al-fresco dining planned for the restaurant’s courtyard area.

More than 90 bookings have already been made for opening night.

Ms Scarpino thanked the friends, family and contractors who helped turn the idea into reality.

She said: “A special thank you to my dad, who’s been here literally every day, from early morning until late in the evenings.

“With all the challenges we had at the other location, we’ve also had a massive support from the community.

“I guess that’s why people are so excited for us to settle into a good venue that gives us a chance to do what we’ve wanted to do.”

The restaurant previously faced two retrospective planning applications for outdoor dining being rejected, with concerns raised about harm to neighbours and opening hours.

Ms Scarpino and the team look forward to welcoming the first diners at their soft launch event this weekend.
