Marchesi Antinori fine wines are literally flying off the shelves. Between the nights of October 2nd and October 4th, a major theft took place in Cortona, where the renowned Tuscan, Italian, and globally acclaimed wine producer operates its logistics and shipping hub. More than 30,000 bottles, already prepared for shipment worldwide, were stolen, including some of Italy most iconic wines, namely Guado al Tasso, Solaia, and Tignanello, with a total value exceeding 5 million euros. The theft involved a significant quantity of these flagship wines, which are among the company most representative labels and among the most sought-after by international collectors.
Investigations are currently underway, as are assessments aimed at determining the exact scale of the theft. Nevertheless, it is fair to say that this ranks among the most significant wine thefts in the history of wine, both in Italy and internationally. All the stolen bottles were equipped with the anti-counterfeiting system adopted by Marchesi Antinori.
According to chief executive officer Renzo Cotarella, “the gang responsible for the robbery was highly organized and well prepared: they disabled the alarm system, knocked out the surveillance cameras, entered with two large trucks, used company equipment, and then disappeared into the night over the weekend. Both the Carabinieri and the State Police are investigating the case”. Given the number of bottles involved and their value, this is the largest wine theft ever carried out in Italy: it is the latest in a series of attacks targeting wine companies and follows similar incidents affecting two other prominent Italian wineries, Banfi and Conterno Fantino.
