    ​Before FNAF, developer Scott Cawthon made Christian family games and mobile apps. His previous game, Chipper & Sons Lumber Co., was heavily criticized by reviewers. People complained that the animatronic beaver characters looked "creepy" and "lifeless, like scary robots."
    ​Scott was devastated and almost quit game development entirely. However, he decided to take that criticism and turn it into a horror game.
    ​August 8, 2014: Five Nights at Freddy’s was released on PC.
    ​The Gameplay: You played as Mike Schmidt, a night security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, trying to survive five nights against possessed animatronics (Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy) using cameras, doors, and limited power.
    ​The Viral Boom: The game became an instant overnight sensation because of YouTubers like Markiplier, Jacksepticeye, and MatPat (The Game Theorists). Their reaction videos and lore deep-dives pushed the game into mainstream internet culture.
    ​2. The Golden Era of Sequels (2014–2016)
    ​Scott capitalized on the massive hype by releasing games at a lightning-fast pace, establishing a deep, hidden lore that fans loved to decode.
    ​FNAF 2 (November 2014): A prequel that introduced the "Toy" animatronics, the Puppet, and the infamous Atari-style retro death minigames, which started revealing the lore of the "Purple Guy" (William Afton) and the murdered children.
    ​FNAF 3 (March 2015): Set 30 years in the future, introducing Springtrap (William Afton trapped in a decayed rabbit suit) and supposedly burning down the story's horrors.

    ​Ultimate Custom Night (2018): A massive crossover game featuring 50 characters, serving as William Afton's personal, endless purgatory.

    ​5. Hollywood and Beyond (2023)
    ​After years in development hell, Blumhouse Productions finally brought FNAF to the big screen.
    ​October 2023: The Five Nights at Freddy's Movie was released in theaters and on streaming. Starring Josh Hutcherson as Mike and Matthew Lillard as William Afton, it featured real, massive animatronics built by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. It was a massive box office hit, grossing over $290 million.
    ​What makes FNAF historic? It proved that a game doesn't need a massive budget to conquer the world. By mixing simple, terrifying gameplay with a puzzle-like hidden story, FNAF turned its community into detectives and changed horror gaming forever.

    I don't know if this makes me a baby but it made me sad when they started cooking the crab without killing it humanely first. I just don't feel right about that.
