For centuries, pizza wasn’t always the beloved food we know today. In fact, many people once believed that it was dangerous—even poisonous. The reason wasn’t the recipe itself, but a surprising misunderstanding that spread across generations and changed how people viewed tomatoes forever.
Back in earlier times, wealthy families often ate off plates made of lead. When acidic foods like tomatoes were served on them, the lead would slowly seep into the food. This caused illness, but instead of blaming the plates, people blamed the tomatoes. Over time, the idea that tomatoes were toxic spread widely, and pizza—covered in tomato sauce—became unfairly feared by many.
Everything changed in 1889 when Queen Margherita of Italy tried a simple pizza topped with tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil during a visit to Naples. She loved it, and that moment helped transform pizza’s reputation forever. That dish was later named the Margherita pizza, and it marked the beginning of pizza becoming one of the most popular foods in the world.
