When most people think of wine, they think of France, Italy, Spain, or California. Canada is not what you would expect when you think of a wine country. Our winters are brutal, our growing season is short, and most of the country is too cold for traditional wine grapes. Somehow, Canada produces some of the world’s most best wines, including Icewine!
I visited three of Canada’s major wine regions (the Niagara Peninsula in Ontario, the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia, and Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley) to understand how geography, climate, tourism, and policy combined to create a thriving wine industry.
