Ever noticed four letters on a bottle of Italian wine and had no idea what they meant? DOCG is one of the most overlooked details on an Italian wine label, and it is also one of the most important. In this video I break down exactly what DOCG stands for, what it means for the quality of the wine in your hand, and why the Italian government is involved in the process before that bottle ever reaches you.

We also talk about two of the most well known DOCG wines, Brunello di Montalcino and Moscato d’Asti, and why earning this designation means something very specific — and very different from what most people assume.

If you drink Italian wine or want to, this is one of those things that will change the way you look at every bottle going forward.

If you want to learn more about Italian wines and put what you’ve learned to use, I’m planning a trip to Italy next year. I have an interest form in my bio. No commitment, just fill it out if you’re curious about traveling with me.
