Vallevo is a very well regarded co-operative winery in the region of Abruzzo, on the eastern coast of Italy. Co-operative wineries buy fruit from a collection of local growers and blend it together to make wines that are fantastic summations of the ‘regional character’ of particular areas.
During the last forty years, Vallevo have grown to more than 500 members with close to 2,000 acres of vineyards. The co-operative produces a large variety of differnet wines, but their best are easily those made from the local Abruzzo varieties. Fruit for these wines is sourced from the co-operative’s top one hundred family producers and is consistently the best fruit available in the region. Winemaker Gianni Pasquale is responsible for the sourcing and blending of these wines, and the Abruzzo local does an admirable job.
Montepulciano makes some famous top-end big reds in the Abruzzo, but the variety also makes amazingly good inexpensive red wine, far better locally than comparable Sangiovese. Aromas and flavours of black plum, black cherry, herbs, and black olives surround a wonderful meaty texture, with enough chewiness to make the wine stand up to food. This is the ideal ‘spaghetti red’ and will bring a smile to your face every time you open a bottle.
