Why is pasta antifascist? Why did Mussolini hate pasta and what did he do to get Italians to eat less of it? In this video I explore the the reasons behind this hatred and how he tried to tempt the nation away from spaghetti.

  1. I do not agree with: "receive good news, eat some pasta". I'claim instead "eating some pasta is good news per se" !

  2. Interesting, didn't know about this before. This does make me interested in the nutritional value of pasta compared to bread and rice. Anyway, you earned yourself a new subscriber, shame you don't have more of them!

  3. the real reason he wound up upside-down in milan was because he broke his spaghetti to fit it into the pot

  4. Ever since I was a little kid, spaghetti has been my favourite food. Now I know why. It's cuz I hate fascists! 🙌

  5. 1. pasta was not a novelty of the XIX century, the stereotype of Italians eating maccheroni is present in European literature since the XVII century. The first industrial production of pasta is from the 1740s.
    2. Fascism did not banished pasta, tried to promote more consumption of rice to reduce grain imports during the war.
    3. Cervi's gesture was not antifascist because pasta was per se antifascist, but because it was the symbol of a proletarian simple meal.

  6. Same with "Germany," unified 10 years later. I lived and worked in Baden-Württemberg 40 years ago, and the cultural divide between North and South was still very, very real.

  7. 4:40 I loved your video, and I would die before giving up on pasta. However calling Marinetti a loser is simply a lack of class by your side. I studied him, and I can say I don't agree with his movement, but he was a rather interesting person, and his ideas, especially the ones before he got close to Mussolini, are worth reading.
