Italians have the best inventions, and among them is the Shakerato. It’s an iced coffee that’s shaken, not stirred. This results in a foamy, chilled coffee that’s perfect for serving in a cocktail glass. And it’s entirely made with just water and coffee — and a tiny hint of sugar and salt to round out the flavors. That’s it! I guarantee you’ll be drinking this iced coffee all summer long.
Normally, this drink is made using a shot of espresso. Since I don’t have an espresso machine, I use my Aeropress with the Fellow Prismo attachment. This produces an espresso-like shot that works just fine for the Shakerato. You could also prepare the coffee in a Moka pot. And in lieu of a cocktail shaker, I use a glass jar, but a plastic protein shaker also works mighty well.
– I’m using 15 grams of finely ground coffee and 50 grams (50 milliliters) of boiling water, weighed on a coffee scale for the best accuracy.
– I add a tiny pinch of salt and a large pinch of sugar to help balance the flavors.
– You’ll need about 6 to 8 ice cubes to shake up a nice frothy Shakerato.
– Strain the drink into a chilled cocktail glass and enjoy immediately!

This is the Shakerato. It’s an Italian coffee drink that’s better than your average ice coffee because it’s shaken up like a cocktail instead of being stirred. In the Aeropress I have 15 grams of freshly ground coffee. And I’m going to add 50 grams of boiled water. And I’m going to give it a stir. And I’m going to pull the Aeropress down to remove as much air as possible. Now I’m adding my Fellow attachment. And I’m going to squeeze this over a jar. I’m adding a tiny pinch of salt, a large pinch of sugar, swirl that around. And to this I’m going to add 6 to 8 ice cubes. And now’s the time to shake vigorously. And here’s your Shakerato. It’s so refreshing and that little bit of sugar and salt takes off the edge the bitterness of the espresso. Enjoy this refreshing cold drink this summer. Cin cin!
