2022 “Year of the Sandwich”

Week 3 – The Italian

🖤 Meat

I’ve been making a variation of this for a few weeks now and each time hadn’t quite nailed a combination I was happy with. I finally landed on the element that brought it all together – provolone cheese. I knew it was a good ‘melter’ cheese and typically used in American videos I see, but I was struggling to find it here in Glasgow. @la_pastina_deli on Byers Road, a newly opened Italian deli, came to the rescue though – and it was worth the wait! The quality of ingredients is what makes this simple toasted sandwich a real success, so I’d urge you to visit your local deli and bakery to purchase the ingredients.

This style of ASMR video is so popular right now; you might have seen the likes of @thescotlandedit @chefthombateman absolutely bossing the style that I believe was created on TikTok at somepoint, although I’m not sure of the origin. So I wanted to give it a go, especially since I wanted to do a toastie this week. You can’t beat the crunch of a freshly fried toastie! I’ve gotta say, I also found the process of slapping about some meat and cheese quite cathartic haha albeit a bit messier than the process of making it had to be, but worth it. I think this style probably suits a more involved process where more techniques are used (chopping, whisking, cracking eggs etc.), but I’m happy with it for my first one.

What’s your view on this style? Are you liking the trend?

Ingredients
– spicy salami @eusebi_deli
– salami Milano @la_pastina_deli
– prosciutto @la_pastina_deli
– provolone cheese @la_pastina_deli
– grated mozzarella
– sourdough bread @cadzowbakehouse
– salted butter @fromageriegillot

Method
1. Slice sourdough and assemble using salami, spicy salami, prosciutto, provolone & mozzarella cheese
2. Melt butter in frying pan and cook on medium heat until golden brown on each side & cheese has melted (add more butter when you flip it over if necessary) – frying in butter ensures optimum crunch!
3. Cut in half and enjoy 😁
