Nonna’s Bread:
Ingredients:
-5 lbs bag of Flour
-2 tbsp. Salt
-Fresh yeast
-2 tbsp Vegetable Shortening (Crisco)
-2 small pots of water
Recipe:
Step 1:
Add 5 pound bag of flour into large bowl. Set some of the flour off to the side. Next add 2 tbsp of salt. Next add 2 small pots of warm water (check video for reference) and 2 tbsp of Crisco. Last use a block of fresh yeast about the size of your palm.
Step 2:
Knead dough and add flour as needed. Continue kneading until dough is springy, about 10 mins.
Step 3:
Cover and let rise for 2 hours in a warm dark place. My Nonna covers with multiple blankets to get a good temperature.
Step 4:
After the 2 hours rising, shape your loaves or rolls of bread into your preferred shape. Place on a lightly oiled or greased baking pan. Cover once again and let rise for another hour.
Step 5:
After second rise, place in oven at 350 degrees F. Bake for 1 hour starting off at bottom rack and finishing on top.
